UNDER THE ANSWERING SKY Written by: Denise Riley Type of poem: Ode Poem By: Jolou Romanillos
I can manage being alone, Can pace out convivial hope Across my managing ground, Someone might call, later. What do the dead make of us that we d flay ourselves trying to hear them though they may sigh at such close loneliness. I would catch, not my echo, but their guarantee that this bright flat blue is a mouth of the world speaking back. There is no depth to that blue. It won t bring the principle of darkness with it , but hums in repose, as radiant static.
THEME Sometimes loneliness is tolerable but it could be someone s darkness.
IMAGERY Can pace out convivial Hope (Line, 2) Hoping for a friend that can cheer him/her up so his no longer lonely and he can be happy. The world speaking back (Line, 12) This could be a throwback\flashback that he remember that gave him a life lesson. But hums, in repost, as radiant static. (Line, 15-16) This means that its something that inside you but its not showing.
LYRIC DEVICES sigh (Line, 8) Onomatopoeia Sigh is one of the example of onomatopoeia.
FIGURATIVE DEVICE Bright flat blue is a mouth (Line, 13) Metaphor On this line bright flat blue is being compared to a mouth. We d flay ourselves trying to hear them Though (Line, 6-7) Hyperbole This line is exaggerating about us that we would flay ourselves just trying to hear them. "There is no depth to that blue" (Line, 13)
