Production Update and Challenges in MQXFP Coil Development at CERN
The production update of MQXFP coils at CERN reveals challenges faced during the fabrication process. Issues such as poor quality traces, short circuits, and circuit delamination have been encountered, leading to delays and rejected prototypes. Despite ongoing investigations and tests, including copper deposition trials and the exploration of non-copper-plated traces, the development of the coils continues with expected delivery timelines. The images provided visually document the issues faced and the steps being taken to address them.

Quench Heater production MQXFP coil #1 trace delivered to BNL has been produced at CERN The first MQXFP coil #2 trace delivered to BNL has been partially produced at CERN Copper deposition made at CERN Etching and drilling outsourced The trace to be delivered to equip MQXFP coil #3 coil has to be fully produced by an external company Trace delivered to CERN 10 of May with 4 weeks delay to initial schedule First MQXFP coil #3 trace was rejected due to SS delamination during etching operation Second prototype trace delivered to CERN shows poor quality Circuit delaminated (QH stations and Vtaps circuits) Photoresist film not correctly removed (potential impregnation problems A lot of Short circuits to ground detected during Hi-pot tests @ 1 kV 2 P. Next steps Copper deposition tests on small samples on-going before copper-plating the next MQXFP coil #4 QH circuit Fabrication issues being investigated Possibility to produce a non copper-plated trace for MQXFP coil # 3 being investigated (expected delivery time: last week of May) Next QH circuit for MQXFP coil #4 coil with copper deposition expected on second week of June 5 P.
