  1. Present Perfect vs Past Simple

  2. Past Simple We use the Past Simple for situations or actions in the past that happened at a certain moment in the past (often a time expression in the past indicates that we must use simple past).

  3. Time expressions used with the Past Simple: - last week, last Monday, last night, last summer - ten minutes ago, three months ago, six years ago - in June, in 2014, in the 20thcentury, in autumn - when I was at school, while he was on holiday - at 10 o clock this morning, yesterday

  4. Present Perfect We use the Present Perfect to say that an action happened at an unspecified time before now. The exact time is not important.

  5. You CANNOT use the Present Perfect with specific time expressions such as: - yesterday, one year ago, last week, - when I was a child, when I lived in Japan, - at that moment, that day, one day, etc.

  6. We CAN use the Present Perfect with unspecific expressions such as: - ever, never, once, - many times, several times, - before, so far, already, yet, etc.

  7. Certain event in the past or how often so far? Past Simple Present Perfect Simple certain event in the past Examples: 1. He went to Canada last summer. whether / how often till now Examples: 1. Has he ever been to Canada? He has been to Canada twice. 2. I rode a horse when I was 12. 2. I have ridden a horse once in my life. 3. They slept in a tent last summer when they were at the sea. 3. The have slept in a tent many times. 4. She first flew by plane when she travelled to Spain. 4. She has flown by plane several times so far. 5. We won the photo competition prize on 31stJuly, 2014. 5. We have never won the photo competition prize up to now.
