Learning Objectives Nurse residents will define process for postmortem care and postmortem responsibilities of the RN Nurse residents will evaluate actions taken in the simulation compared to the process defined in organizational policy Nurse residents will discuss their emotions related to providing postmortem care

  3. Content Outline Introduction to the Postmortem Policy- Presentation/ Discussion using Postmortem Care Process Handout Pronouncement of Death Notification of Patient s Family Reportable Deaths (coroner cases) Organ/ Tissue Donation Ohio Dept of Health Vital Statistics certificate of Death

  4. Content Outline Preparation of the Body How to handle indwelling tubes and drains Cleansing the body Postmortem Kit preparing the body for transportation to the morgue Two person double check of patient identification tags from postmortem kit

  5. Content Outline Discussion of how actions in simulation compare to the policy and processes related to a patient death and postmortem care End of 15 minute Presentation, however, we are allotting additional time for learners to discuss and process feelings related to patient death Discussion of learner feelings related to death of our simulated patient

  6. Summary Challenging and emotional subject for new nurses This activity allows them to learn in a safe environment
