  2. Outcome of this Presentation 2 Students must be able to Define Nursery. Identify and Explain Nursery Operations. Apply Plant Propagation Techniques within a nursery environment.

  3. Nursery 3 The place where (seedlings and trees) are grown to desired age and cared for before they are transplanted unto the main field or sold out.

  4. Nursery Operations 4 Nursery operations covers the creation and maintenance of plant farms including planting seeds, fertilizing seedlings and harvesting all types of plants. The major nursery operations includes operation right from emergence of young plantlet till they are ready for uprooting and transplanted in the field or sold out.

  5. Nursery Operations cont. . . 5 Potting the seedling Pots should be filled with proper potting mixtures. Manure and Irrigation Compost is added to soil. Addition of fertilizer will give healthy plants. Plant protection measures For better protection from pest and diseases, regular observation is essential.

  6. Nursery Operations cont. . . 6 Weed control Timely control of weeds is essential as they compete with plants for food, space and other essentials. Use of cover crops, mulching, use of chemicals (herbicides) must be practiced. Measure against heat and cold young seedlings are susceptible to strong sun and low temperatures therefore shading may be used.

  7. Nursery Operation cont. . . 7 Packing of Nursery plants Young plants are kept together till they are transplanted or sold out Sale management Demand is high during rainy seasons, proper strategy should be followed for sale of nursery plants. Advertise in local newspapers, posters, catalogues, etc.

  8. Plant Propagation Techniques Crafting: Tissues of plants are joined to continue their growth together. 8

  9. Plant Propagation Techniques 9 Layering: Occurs when branch touches the ground therefore producing adventitious roots.

  10. . Plant Propagation Techniques 10 Cutting: A root/stem of the source plant is placed in a suitable medium such as moist soil.

  11. Plant Propagation Techniques 11 Fruit Tree propagation: Carried out by grafting or budding a desired variety onto a suitable root stock.

  12. Plant Propagation Techniques 12 Division: The plant is broken up into two or more parts, the root and crown of each part is kept intact.

  13. Plant Propagation Techniques 13 Micro propagation: Used to multiply plants that have been genetically modified.

  14. Plant Propagation Techniques 14 Twin scaling: Propagating plant bulbs that have a basal plate.

  15. Recap 15 The definition of a Nursery: a place where plants are cared for and grown to desired age. Nursery operations: The creation and maintenance of plant farms including planting seeds, fertilizing seedlings and harvesting all types of plants.
