Our Physical Education and Health program focuses on developing physical literacy, mental health awareness, and responsible behaviors for students to lead a healthy lifestyle. With a holistic approach, we offer a wide range of activities, integrated health topics, and access to facilities like the Active Living Centre and community spaces. Students engage in sports, fitness activities, and learn to connect their physical health with mental, emotional, and social wellbeing.

Physical Education & Health Our program is designed to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes conducive to a physically active, and healthy lifestyle. We accomplish this by helping students develop their physical literacy through a range of individual and team sport and fitness activities.
Physical Education & Health Our program emphasizes and prioritizes mental health and its interconnectedness to our physical wellbeing. The goal of the course is to connect students to the mental, physical, emotional, and social dimensions of health required to live a happy and healthy life.
Physical Education & Health Students will also learn responsible safe behaviours and risk management strategies through our integrated health program. We cover a wide range of topics which include: CPR & 1stAid Substance use and abuse Fitness management Nutrition Human sexuality Mental health and wellbeing
Physical Education and Health Our facilities include: Our Active Living Center (ALC) Our Gymnasium Our green space in our back field Our community (Assiniboine forest and walking paths in and around our school)
Physical Education & Health In our program students will experience a wide range of activities including, individual and team sports, as well individual and group fitness activities. Our program provides choice and opportunity to our students to foster a positive relationship with physical activity. Our program focuses on whole student wellness. Through our program students learn to connect their physical health to their mental, emotional and social health, through fun and engaging activities that build community and connection.
Active Living Centre Our ALC is a brand-new inclusive space open to ALL SHS students who wish to improve their physical and mental wellbeing. Students will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to safely and effectively use our ALC during their physical education and health classes. The ALC is free to use and will be available to students during spares, lunch, and before and after school.
Community and Outdoor Activities Our program promotes a variety of indoor and outdoor activities including: Snowshoeing Soccer Frolf Ultimate Frisbee Slow Pitch Nature walks Broomball We are extremely lucky to have green space and be adjacent to the Assiniboine Forest and the walking paths around Tuxedo Golf Course.
Course Offerings Physical Education 10F/20F This compulsory course is designed to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes conducive to a physically active and healthy lifestyle through a range of individual and team sport and fitness activities. Students will learn responsible safe behaviours and risk management strategies. Active Healthy Lifestyles 30F/40F This course is designed to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes conducive to a physically active and healthy lifestyle through a range of individual and team sport and fitness activities. Principles of Fitness 30F/40F This course will expose students to variety of fitness training techniques, with the focus being on the health-related fitness components. Principles of Basketball 30F/40F This course is designed provide students a broader view of the game of basketball. The course will cover technical aspects of basketball, individual and team skills, but also training principles, coaching, refereeing, scorekeeping, and other administrative areas of the game.
Shaftesbury Intramural Program Runs all year during the lunch hour and is open to all students. A great way to develop new friendships and learn team work skills in a fun and inclusive way. All grade levels and abilities are encouraged to participate. Prizes are awarded for commitment, attitude and effort. Activities include: Ultimate Frisbee Dodgeball Basketball Badminton Soccer Floor Hockey Flag Football
