Patient Mobility and Cancer: Role of Joint Actions in European Cancer Care
Activities focusing on standardizing cancer care in Europe include quality assurance of screening programs, defining survivorship, establishing Comprehensive Cancer Control Networks, addressing socio-economic inequalities, and promoting public health genomics. The European Cancer Patient Coalition emphasizes the development of European Reference Networks for rare and pediatric cancers, offering opportunities for treatment guidelines, education, and training. Cross-border mobility of patients and professionals is facilitated by extending ERNs, networking CCCs, and establishing new transnational cancer networks. The upcoming Joint Action CRANE will play a key role in establishing the EU Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres.

Several activities undertaken to standardise cancer care: Quality assurance of cancer screening programmes European Guide for Quality National Cancer Control Programmes Disinvestment in cancer care Definition of survivorship Definition and concept of Comprehensive Cancer Control Networks (CCCNs) Sets of standards for cancer care Patient pathways for two cancers Socio-economic inequalities in cancer Public health genomics and cancer Standardising cancer care and cancer data 2 European Cancer Patient Coalition
Development of European Reference Networks Primarily intended for rare and paediatric cancers, they do represent an authentic transnational approach to the treatment and management of cancer They have the potential for: Treatment Guideline development Education Training Europe does not have a physical European cancer institute but many proxies Transnational approaches and structures 3 European Cancer Patient Coalition
There are a number of possibilities for cross-border mobility of patients and professionals: - Extending ERNs to frequent cancers - Networking of CCCs and of networks already covering certain cancers - Development of new transnational regional cancer networks - Centres of reference Opportunities for cross-border collaborations and treatment 4 European Cancer Patient Coalition
- One of the important flagships is in the establishment of the EU Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres (CCCs) - Preparations for this Network will be done by a special Joint Action - JA CRANE is in the final stages of preparation, it is expected to start in October 2022 - Special role of patient representation is reserved for ECPC - Coordination by NIJZ as in the previous 3 JAs on cancer control Europe s Beating Cancer Plan (EBCP) and its role in patient mobility 5 European Cancer Patient Coalition
Final messages and reflections for the future Patients in Europe have the right to better care and better overall cancer control We need to aim at better cancer care and cancer management close to where patients live, this is their right and need Cross-border mobility is extremely important for the following reasons: Convergence of quality of cancer care in Europe Streamlining and implementing guidelines Enhancing collaboration, education and training of health professionals Especially smaller EU MSs would strongly benefit from enhanced transnational collaboration 6 European Cancer Patient Coalition
Quote on patient mobility Cancer patients need to obtain timely, high quality comprehensive cancer care, provided by the competent structure in their own country and/or beyond, based on their needs and the respective treatment required. 7 European Cancer Patient Coalition
