Passive Voice

The Passive Voice means that the subject of
the sentence is not doing the action of the
verb, but rather the action of the verb is being
done to the subject of the sentence.
English

is/are being + past participle
to
form the passive voice:
A new house
is being built
on our street.
Passive Voice

To form the Passive Voice in PD, you use the
forms of
waerre
(Video 23) +
the past
participle
 (Video 35).
Subject – waerre – past participle
Die Maschien
waerd gwesche
.
The car is being washed.
Die Bicher
waerre gelese
.
The books are being read.
Passive Voice

Although passive sentences need not indicate
who performs the action of the verb, some
passive sentences include an “
agent
”.
When there is an “agent” in the sentence, PD
uses the preposition
VUN
 before it.
Remember, VUN is a Dative Preposition!
Es Haus
waerd vun meim Noochber
widderhergschtellt
.
The house is being restored by my neighbor.

Passive voice in Pennsylvania Dutch (PD) involves the subject of the sentence not performing the action but having the action done to them. PD uses forms of "waerre" and the past participle to form passive sentences. The presence of an agent in passive sentences is indicated using the dative preposition "VUN." Practice turning active sentences into passive and improve your PD skills.
