  2. Parent Cafs What are they? Parent Caf s are gatherings where parents talk in small groups about problems they deal with. They learn ways to address their problems from each other. In this Caf we will talk about helping your child to insert topic area. We will lead off by describing the process and the table questions and then we will get started.

Program Agenda/Timeline Introduction to Questions and Process 10 minutes Optional introductory comments on topic area 5-10 minutes Small Group Discussion on Question 1 10 minutes Small Group Discussion on Question 2 10 minutes Large Group Discussion 15 minutes Reflection and Personal Commitment Card 5 minutes

  4. Caf Agreements Speak from your own experience. Use I statements. Listen attentively: Don t interrupt. OK to ask for clarification. No put downs of yourself or others. Don t give advice. Confidentiality: What we talk about in Parent Caf , stays at Parent Caf . Turn your cell phones off or on silent.

  5. Optional Introductory Comments on Topic for the day 5-10 minutes If someone who can help stimulate the discussion on the questions at the tables, they can share thoughts for 5-10 minutes.

  6. Parent Caf Process at each table Get 2 volunteers per table: A discussion facilitator and a scribe. 1. Each table will be assigned a starting question from the list. Discuss for about 10 minutes. The table discussion facilitator helps insure that everyone at the table has a chance to talk. 2. The scribe will record the key points from the discussion on handout. Circle Question your group is answering. 3. After 10 minutes you discuss a 2nd question that your group picks from the list.

  8. Parent Caf Large group discussion 15 minutes Discussion leaders share a key point from your table s discussion. Insert session leader name will come around with a Mic so everyone can hear. All the points recorded by the table scribes will be summarized and distributed to those attending the sessions.

  9. Sharing of Major Points from Small Group Discussion 15 minutes Insert Session Topic 1. Insert question 1? 2. Insert question 2? 3. Insert question 3?

  10. Reflection and Commitment 5 minutes Reflect on what you heard and learned tonight. At your table, take a personal commitment card. Complete the statement: I will help my child insert session topic by: Take your card with you as a reminder to do what you say you are going to do.
