  1. Anglo-Saxons WALT: understand who the Anglo-Saxons were, where they came from and when they first settled.

  2. Where did the Anglo-Saxons come from? Do you know what these places are called today and who lives there? Click here to view a map TTYP - Why do you think they came to England?

  3. The Anglo-Saxons came from Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. These fearsome warriors rowed across the North Sea in wooden boats to England and forced the tribes in Britain to flee their homes. Within a few centuries, the land they had invaded was known as England, after the Angles.

  4. Believe it or not, the Anglo-Saxons were warrior-farmers. They began to invade Britain while the Romans were still in control. They wanted control and land. The Anglo-Saxons were tall, fair-haired men, armed with swords and spears and round shields. Their other skills consisted of hunting, farming, textile (cloth) production and leather working.

  5. There were three groups of people who settled in Britain. Jutes Angles Saxons The Angles and the Saxon tribes were the largest of the three attacking tribes and so we often know them as Anglo-Saxons.

  6. Why did the Anglo-Saxons come to Britain? To fight Some Anglo-Saxons were warriors who enjoyed fighting. They thought the Britons were weak and easy to beat without the Romans around. To farm Many Anglo-Saxons came peacefully, to find land to farm. Their homelands in Scandinavia often flooded so it was tough to grow enough food back there. To make new homes Whole families set sail across the sea to live in Britain. They brought tools, weapons and farm animals with them and built villages with new homes. They were invited With Picts and Scots attacking from the north, the Britons invited some Anglo-Saxons to help defend them. But they didn t leave! They took over.
