Oceanus: The Titan God of Water and Rivers
Oceanus, the Titan god born of Uranus and Gaea, is the original source of water in Greek mythology. He is the god of the Okeanos, a vast river encircling the world and connecting realms. Married to Tethys, his sister, they had thousands of children, Oceanids and river spirits. Oceanus, depicted in ancient art with bull horns and a fish tail, remained neutral in Titan revolts and never faced consequences, unlike his brethren. Some even believe he is akin to Ophion, an older Titan. Explore the myths and legends surrounding Oceanus, the divine figure revered as the embodiment of water.

OCEANUS BY JENNA BUMILLER
WHO IS OCEANUS? THE ORIGINAL SOURCE OF WATER!! OCEANUS WAS BORN THE SON OF URANUS AND GAEA, MAKING HIM APART OF THE TWELVE TITANS. ALTHOUGH OTHER STORIES ABOUT OCEANUS SAY HE THAT HE WAS THE CHILD OF CHAOS AND GAEA. HE IS THE TITAN GOD OF THE OKEANOS, AN ENORMOUS RIVER THE ENCIRCLED THE WORLD AND IT CONNECTS THE WORLD TO OTHER REALMS. HE WAS ALSO THOUGHT TO BE THE REASON FOR THE SALT WATER AND THE FRESH WATER IN THE WORLD.
THE TWELVE TITANS THE TWELVE TITANS WERE A POWERFUL GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO RULED THE WORLD BEFORE THE OLYMPIANS. IN THE TWELVE TITANS, THE FIRST GENERATION, WERE SIX BOYS AND SIX GIRLS. THEY WERE CHARACTERIZED TO BE IMMORTAL GIANTS WITH INCREDIBLE STRENGTH AND KNOWLEDGE. THEY WERE ALL CHILDREN OF GAEA, THE EARTH, AND URANUS, THE HEAVENS. THEY ALL TOOK THE POWER OF THEIR FATHER, URANUS, AND RULED.
LOVE LIFE AND CHILDREN OCEANUS MARRIED TETHYS, HIS SISTER. TOGETHER THEY HAD 3,000 SONS AND 3,000 DAUGHTERS. THE DAUGHTERS WERE CALLED OCEANIDS AND WERE SPIRITS OF STREAMS AND SPRINGS WHILE THE SONS WERE THE SPIRITS OF RIVERS. THE EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF CHILDREN COULD CAUSE A FLOOD DUE TO A OVER PRODUCTION OF WATER, BECAUSE OF THIS OCEANUS AND TETHYS COULD NOT HAVE ANYMORE CHILDREN. AS A RESULT, THE COUPLE SPLIT.
THE LOOKS IN ANCIENT GREEK ART, OCEANUS WAS DRAWN OUT TO HAVE BULL HORNS AND INSTEAD OF LEGS HE HAD THE TAIL OF A SERPENTINE FISH. THIS LOOK WAS CARRIED DOWN TO HIS CHILDREN. OCEANUS WAS KNOWN TO LOOK AS A SIMPLE SEA GOD.
NOT PARTICIPATING WHEN THE TITANS WOULD REVOLT AGAINST THEIR FATHER, CRONUS, IT IS TO BE BELIEVED THAT OCEANUS WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO WOULD NOT FOLLOW THROUGH. DUE TO NEVER PARTICIPATING IN THE REVOLTS, HE NEVER GOT IMPRISONED IN TARTUS BY ZEUS WHEN THE WAR WAS OVER. ACCORDING TO HOMER, A GREEK POET, OCEANUS ALSO NEVER ATTENDED THE ASSEMBLY OF THE GODS, WHICH ZEUS DEMANDED FOR ALL GODS TO ATTEND.
TWIN? IT IS BELIEVED BY OTHERS THAT OCEANUS IS IDENTICAL TO OPHION, AN OLDER TITAN WHO RULED BRIEFLY BEFORE GETTING OVERTHROWN BY CRONUS, OCEANUS'S BROTHER, AND REHEAR, OCEANUS'S SISTER.
SHORES OF OCEANUS SARPEDON, AN ISLAND LOCATED NEAR ERYTHIA AND THE GARDEN OF HESPERIDES, WAS SURROUNDED BY OCEANUS. IN THE NORTHERN STREAM OF OCEANUS IS THE LAND OF HYPERBORENS. IT IS BELIEVED THAT WHO EVER LIVES HERE DURING THE WINTER TIME WILL LIVE A LONG TIME AND BE FREE OF WARS AND DISEASE. WHILE IN THE SOUTHERN SHORES OF OCEANUS IS LAND OF ETHIOPIANS STRETCHING FROM THE FARTHEST EAST TO THE FARTHEST WEST.
THE MARFORIO THIS STATUE IS KNOWN TO BE ON OF THE TALKING STATUES IN ROME. THE SCULPTURE WAS CREATED IN THE FIRST CENTURY OUT OF MARBLE TO BE IDENTIFIED AS OCEANUS. THE STATUE IS LOCATED IN THE COURTYARD OF THE PALAZZO DE CONSERVATORI.
