Addressing the Water Crisis in Jordan: Causes, Consequences, and Solutions
Jordan faces a severe water crisis due to water scarcity, pollution, and overuse. The country's rivers are running dry, and the water supply meets only a portion of the population's demand. Causes include pollution from various sources, climate change, and overconsumption. Consequences include waterborne diseases and scarcity leading to health risks and economic challenges. Solutions focus on recycling wastewater and promoting water reuse to mitigate water scarcity and pollution.

WATER CRISIS IN JORDAN BY: SARA, SAMA & JOELLE
INTRODUCTION TO WATER CRISIS IN JORDAN Jordan is one of the most water-scarce countries in the world, Jordan is the second most water scarce country in the world. Jordan's annual renewable water resources are less than 100 m3 per person. The country's renewable water supply currently meets around two-thirds of the population's water demands, with groundwater being used twice as quickly as it can be replenished
ISSUES: Water pollution Water shortage The country's namesake river is nearly running dry. The flow in the Jordan River is less than 10 percent of its historical average, and the Yarmouk River, a major tributary, is greatly diminished. The Jordan's once-rushing waters feed into the Dead Sea, a saltwater lake that is disappearing. Jordan is one of the most water-scarce countries in the world. The country s renewable water supply currently meets around two-thirds of the population s water demands, with groundwater being used twice as quickly as it can be replenished. Population growth and the influx of refugees from regional conflicts put additional strain on an already stressed water supply. Climate change will exacerbate the problem. Jordan s water security is critical to the country s long-term political and economic st
CAUSES: Water pollution Water shortage The overflow of wastewater pumping stations, leaks from sewage systems and exposure to industrial and commercial waste are polluting Jordan s surface river sources. This has resulted in nitrate and phosphorus contamination of water supplies Climate change. Natural calamities such as droughts and floods. Increased human consumption. Overuse and wastage of water. A global rise in freshwater demand. Overuse of aquifers and its consequent slow recharge
CONSEQUENCES: Water pollution Waterborne pathogens, in the form of disease-causing bacteria and viruses from human and animal waste, are a major cause of illness from contaminated drinking water. Diseases spread by unsafe water include cholera, giardia, and typhoid Water pollution also drastically affects aquatic life. It affects their metabolism, and behaviour, and causes illness and eventual death Water shortage Water shortage limits access to safe water for drinking and for practising basic hygiene at home, in schools and in health-care facilities. When water is scarce, sewage systems can fail and the threat of contracting diseases like cholera surges. Scarce water also becomes more expensive.
SOLUTION: Water shortage: The other way to counter water scarcity in Jordan is by recycling and reuse of municipal wastewater which is an attractive method in terms of water savings. Infact, the reuse of the treated wastewater in Jordan has reached one of the highest levels in the world. Water pollution: recycling and reuse of municipal wastewater, and pick up litter and throw it away in a garbage can.
