  14. Slide 14 - Literature Program Application Tips Changes and Challenges Question #3SQ Please take special note of Standard Question #3SQ, required of all Literature applicants. Use this question to elaborate on any artistic, managerial or fiscal challenges or new developments at your organization. Clearly highlight reasons for recurring deficits, tax issues, etc. that may appear on your Form 990s, audits or other public filings over the past few years and discuss specific steps your organization is taking to address them.

  15. Slide 15 - Literature Program Application Tips Check to be sure your organization s Grants Gateway document vault has a prequalified status well before the deadline. Read the narrative question. Then answer the question with clarity, brevity and conviction. Don t assume Panelists are familiar with your organization, as they are drawn from all across the State. It s appropriate to cite genuine accomplishment and place your work in a context, but avoid grandstanding and self-praise. Panelists must read many pages of applications and appreciate learning as quickly as possible the nature of the work to be funded, who is doing it, why, and how. Facts, transparency and vision. Double check that you have answered all the questions for your category as well as the eligibility and standard questions. Do not answer questions for categories in which you are not applying. Each category has a letter preceding the question number so Question B1 would be Book/Literary Magazine Publication, P1 would be Public Programs, etc. Have someone who has not written the application read it for sense, and clarity and accuracy before submitting. Spell check and proofread the application. Especially important in the Literature Program.

  16. Slide 16 - Literature Program Application Tips (continued) Make sure numbers on Project and Organizational Budgets and in the Expenditure Summary in Grants Gateway correspond with numbers referenced in the narrative. Use the Project Budget notes section (it follows the Project Budget itself) to explain income and expense lines that are not self-evident. Also explain any items in the organizational budget that vary by 20% from a previous year. Explain debt and recurring deficits and give a clear plan for how your organization is addressing them see Slide 14 regarding Standard Question 3SQ. Double check that you have submitted all required support material for your category. Submit your application well before the deadline. Heavy site traffic may cause delays. We regret that applications cannot be accepted after the deadline; there are no exceptions.

  17. Slide 17 - RESOURCES An alternative to a direct NYSCA application is to apply for local arts funding through the Decentralization site serving your county (see http://www.nysca.org/public/resources/local_dec.htm). NYSCA-funded applicants may receive no-charge technical assistance from the NY Council on Non-Profits (NYCON - http://nycon.org/). The contact for NYSCA-funded applicants is Andrew Marietta, Regional Manager Phone: (607) 436-3124 or (800) 515-5012 ext. 141. Non-profit organizations that are not recipients of direct NYSCA funding are eligible to become members of NYCON at reasonable costs based upon budget size: http://www.nycon.org/nycon-membership- benefit/. Fellowships for NYS writers are administered by the New York Foundation for the Arts: https://www.nyfa.org/Content/Show/Artists'%20Fellowships Commissions for playwrights are available through the Individual Artists Program Theatre Commissions on the NYSCA website: http://www.nysca.org/downloads/guidelines/GG19/FY19IndividualArtists_Guidelines_Applicatio n_Instructions.pdf

Specifics detailing your literary organization s artistic mission, strategies and vision, its managerial/fiscal/governance policies and practices, and its approach to serving and reaching its public. Q: How can I make my application as strong as possible? Read and follow the Literature Program Guidelines, answer the narrative questions for your category with clarity, brevity, and consistency, as well as passion for your mission. Double check that you have submitted all required support materials. Proofread. Submit your application well before the deadline. Q: What should we submit as a support video? NYSCA is interested in seeing work samples that will help us to clearly understand your organization s aesthetic. Examples of this could be a 3-minute video from a recent reading, showing the literary artist, the audience and curatorial introduction (from your most recent season), or a 3 -minute compilation of moments from several recent author readings or panel discussions, or festival footage, all showing literary artists and audience composition.
