The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is America's leading civil space program focused on space exploration, scientific research, and technological advancements. With a workforce of nearly 18,000, NASA's mission includes human expansion across the Solar System, economic growth in space industries, and promoting American leadership in aerospace technologies. Established in 1958, NASA's vision is to discover and expand knowledge for the benefit of humanity, with a budget of $24.04 billion for FY22.

NASA Mission Directorates (How We Do Business) AERONAUTICS RESEARCH EXPLORATION SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT SPACE OPERATIONS SCIENCE SPACE TECHNOLOGY MISSION SUPPORT DIRECTORATE Responsible for enabling sustained human exploration missions and operations in our solar system. NASA s Space Operations Mission Directorate (SOMD) manages NASA s current and future space operations in and beyond low-Earth orbit, including commercial launch services to the International Space Station. Engages the Nation's science community, sponsors scientific research, and develops and deploys satellites and probes in collaboration with NASA's partners around the world. Assessing Performance of NASA s Major Projects Administrator Deputy Administrator (CAO) Associate Administrator (COO) Deputy Administrator (DA) designated as NASA Chief Acquisition Officer (CAO)* Office of Procurement Deputy CAO and Senior Procurement Executive Chief Program Management Officer The Assistant Administrator for Procurement serves as Deputy CAO; reports to the DA The Associate Administrator (AA) serves as the Chair of NASA s two primary management councils that oversee Acquisition decisions, including for major projects: the Acquisition Strategy Council, and the Agency Program Management Council Mission Directorates NASA Centers The Chief Program Management Officer position created, combining the role of the Program Management Improvement Officer* and program management responsibilities previously held by NASA s Chief Engineer; reports to the AA. Mission Directorates develop acquisition strategies and manage the program/project portfolios at Headquarters Program/Project Managers execute programs and projects at various NASA Centers Note: This chart reflects the updated roles and relationships with respect to NASA Acquisition oversight; other organizations within NASA also play important roles in the acquisition process *The Chief Acquisition Officer role is required under 41 U.S.C. Section 1702(b)); the Program Management Improvement Officer is required under the Performance Management Improvement Accountability Act.
