Hip hop has its origins in the Afro-American
community in the South Bronx area of New
York.
Its name is through to come from the word
‘hip’ meaning ‘in the know’ or ‘fashionable’
and ‘hop’ which is a movement.
Hip hop started in the 1970s and today it is
an important element in the youth cultures
of most countries in the world.
DJ Africa Bambaataa, is one of the most
influential American hip hop DJs, said that
the most important part of the hip hop
culture are DJ-ing, MC-ing (speaking words to
music), breaking and graffiti.
