Mr. Holmes is an experienced social studies teacher at Lake Olympia Middle School. He has a diverse background and a passion for helping students succeed. The Course Organizer Mr. Holmes Teacher: Student: Level: Period: 6th Grade Who is Mr Holmes? This Course: 6th Grade Social Studies GT/Pre-AP I have lived and toured places around the world such as Florida, Delaware, Texas, Michigan, North Carolina, California, South Carolina, Georgia, Hawaii, Korea, Taiwan, Canada, Japan, and Mexico. I received my Bachelor s Degree from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. I taught English in a public high school in Kyoto, Japan. This is my 2nd year at Lake Olympia Middle School. I love helping students fulfill their potential. Some of my interests are cooking, officiating basketball, coaching, and reading. I am a husband and father. Course Map This Course: Teacher: Mr. Holmes World Cultures and Geography I: Western Hemisphere includes Late & Make-up Work, Missed Exams, and Bathroom Policies Late Work: All work should be turned in on time. There will be 10 point deduction for every late day for a maximum of a 50 point deduction. Make-up work: Only for excused absences and should be returned in a reasonable amount of time. (e.g. If you miss 3 days, you have 3 days to make it up.) It is the student s responsibility to ask for make-up work. Missed Exam: Discuss with teacher to make-up. Restroom Policy: Bathroom may not be used for the first 10 minutes or last 10 minutes of class. Must use the purple vest to use the restroom. Students are expected to follow classroom expectations and the LOMS Student Handbook guidelines at all times. My class is a CHAMPS classroom. I will be clear in all expectations throughout the year. Students who don t follow set guidelines and rules are subject to disciplinary action and consequences.
Course Map This Course: World Cultures and Geography I: Western Hemisphere This Course: Teacher: Mr. Holmes Assignments Class Work: It is expected that students will complete class work assignments by the end of a class period unless otherwise instructed by the teacher. Homework: Reading will be assigned daily. Homework will be assigned routinely. Students are to return homework the day after it is assigned unless otherwise specified. Warm-Ups: Warm-ups will be completed daily. Students will use the first section of their spiral notebook for Warm-up (Engage Activity) daily. Students are expected to date each warm-up. If there is no warm-up, students are to write No Warm-Up or Absent if they were absent. Warm-up notebooks will be collected for a daily grade at the end of each nine week period. Projects: Students will complete projects periodically throughout the units. Some projects will be worked on in class. Due dates and explanations will be given, along with rubrics broken down by points. Directions will be clarified in class for all projects. Quizzes: Quizzes will be given throughout the units. Students will be notified of any upcoming quizzes in advance. Tests: Students will be assessed over concepts that they have been taught within the current unit. Students will receive notice of tests at least 2 weeks prior to it being given. Notices will be found on my Lake Olympia website. Test formats will include, but are not limited to: Multiple choice, Matching, Interpreting Graphs, Labeling Maps, Brief Constructed Response, and Political Cartoon Analysis questions. Menu: Every nine weeks students will be issued an optional menu of engaging and challenging activities related to the upcoming Units. The menu will be extra credit and the student s menu will be due one week before the end of each grading period. Students can turn in the menu projects early. Extra Credit Opportunities Bring a news article of a current event related to social studies and provide a synopsis to the class.
