Gr 6 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 2, Topic 2
What is a
mixture
?

A mixture
consists of at least
 two or
more
different materials mixed
together
.
Gr 6 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 2, Topic 2
Examples of
mixtures

A mixture
can consist of:
Solid substances
(e.g. peanuts and
raisins)
Solid and liquid substances
(e.g.
cup of coffee)
Liquid substances
(concentrated
cool drink and water)
Gr 6 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 2, Topic 2
Mixing Solids

In some mixtures of solids the different
substances are still clearly visible after
mixing.
What examples can learners
provide?
peanuts and raisins
dried fruit
different coloured or types of sweets
sugar and cinnamon mix

Separating
substances
 in a
mixture

How can these substances be
separated?
peanuts and raisins
dried fruit
different coloured or types of
sweets
sugar and cinnamon mix

Gr 6 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 2, Topic 2
Mixing solids

The
bigger the particles
of materials are in
the mixture the
easier it is to separate
them out.

e.g. rice and peas
The
smaller the particles
of materials are
in the mixture the
more difficult it is to
separate
 them out.

e.g. sand and sugar
Gr 6 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 2, Topic 2
Mixing Liquids

In certain mixtures, the materials are
mixed so well together that
we cannot
see the different materials after mixing
.
Such mixtures are called “
solutions
”.
This happens especially when
liquids
 are
mixed.

What examples can learners provide?

cup of coffee

milkshake

concentrated cool drink and water

custard

Exploring mixtures of materials in Grade 6 Natural Sciences and Technology, students learn about what mixtures are, examples of mixtures including solids and liquids, mixing solids, separating substances, and mixing liquids. The content also discusses the visibility of different substances in mixtures, particle size effects on separation, and the concept of solutions formed by well-mixed materials, providing examples for better understanding.
