Mixed Connective Tissue Disease (MCTD)

MIXED CONNECTIVE
TISSUE DISEASE

By Elly Kim, Abby Hook, and Christianna Swift

What is it?

Mixed connective tissue disease
(MTCD), also known as Sharp’s
syndrome, is a very rare systemic
inflammatory rheumatic disease
and can be diagnosed by clinical
evaluation, patient history, or
special blood tests
(Mixed
Connective Tissue Disease)
.

(Mixed Connective Tissue
Disease: MCTD Explained)

What are the Symptoms?

The symptoms of mixed connective tissue disease include symptoms which
overlap with two or more connective tissue diseases because of the nature
of the disease. These symptoms may include blue or white color changes
in painfully cold fingers and toes which occurs in 90% of people with MCTD
(Mixed Connective Tissue Disease)

What Causes it?

The main cause of MCTD is
autoimmunity, described by when
your immune system mistakenly
attacks your body's healthy cells
(Mixed Connective Tissue Disease).

(Autoimmunity)

Who is Affected?

This can affect anybody, since
there is no known cause of this
disease; however, it is more
commonly diagnosed in women
under the age of 30 (Mixed
Connective Tissues Disease).

(Epidemiology of MCTD)

What are treatment
options?

Corticosteriods are effective and used when
the disease is diagnosed in the early stages.
Mild cases can be treated with nonsteroidal
drugs or corticosteriods.  Severe cases will
require high doses of corticosteroid and
immunosuppressive drugs. (Mixed Connective
Tissue Disease (MCTD) - Bone, Joint, and
Muscle Disorders).

(Corticosteroids)
