Culture
Explain that your experience of sport will depend on your own culture/your experiences of society?
Explain how your upbringing me impact on your participation in sport?
If I come from a really supportive family that actively
play sports themselves, I am more likely to take part in sport myself because……(you could talk about following family
members into similar sports and reasons behind this)
Explain the opposite effect on participation in sport? (e.g. coming from a non supportive family……).
How may your culture impact on which sports you may participate in? Can you give examples of sports that people of certain
cultures may not participate in? and why this is the case?
How does location effect involvement in sport?
If I lived in a small village, in a rural area, I am likely to participate
in…….because…… Whereas if I lived in a city I am more likely to……
Explain that different sports/club target people from different cultures. Can you give examples of this?
Mr Gibbison’s example for Culture (just a start!)

Your living location could impact on what sports you experience. For example, if you live in a city you have access to fitness
suites; swimming pools and this will make it easier for you to participate in sport. If you live in the middle of nowhere, you
might not have the facilities and you might not have the transport to be able to get to the nearest facilities this will make it
difficult for you to participate.

Identity
Identity is what you associate to things- such as a person or a place. It is important to try and create a positive identity.
Explain that sports and sports people want a positive identity/image? Why?
Give an example (in your opinion) of a person or a place that has a positive identity? And explain why?
 e.g Jessica Ennis is a
person who has a positive identity amongst the media and her fellow athletes. This is because…..
Explain and give examples of how new or old equipment/facilities give a place/sport an identity.
How would this identity impact of sports participation?
e.g South forest swimming pool is now quite old and run down. Some
people think it’s a poor swimming venue and this gives the facility a bad identity. This could impact on participation in
swimming because……
If you host a good/bad event- how would this impact on participation or impressions? (Can you give examples?)
What ‘identity’ does a good/bad event give to the host country? (you could talk about the shop window effect)

Environment
The environment is the location and surroundings that we live in.
Does sport improve environments? (Can you give examples to support and argue against?).
Think of a new sports facility being built- name the facility and explain how it might have improved or damaged the
environment?
e.g Mansfield Town FC have just built a training facility is Pleasley. This was built on some old waste land so…..
Explain that when new facilities are built, the impact on the environment needs to be considered. Such as;
Transport? What's the impacts on the road (and pollution) of high numbers of people attending sports events.
Animals?
Energy?
 e.g

New sports facilities being built try and consider energy usage of the facility. This is because….
Health?
Linked to sports participation levels; why do councils want to keep ‘green spaces’. (what are they used for? Who by? Why are
they important?)

Sentence starter ideas in purple but try and come up with your own
Crime/anti-social behaviour
Lots of crime and poor behaviour can be seen in the UK. Being involved in sport can lead to a decrease in crime/poor
behaviour because…….(
give your own opinion)
Which genders and age groups are targeted through sport when trying to reduce crimes? Why are they focussed on?
Give an example of a sport that you could get involved in? and explain why it may reduce the chances of you becoming
involved in crime instead?
In Warsop, I could attend the local gym. This would give me the chance to stay fit in an evening
and also keep me off the streets. This is good because…..(make reference to crime/poor behaviour)
Why does crime levels
increase
when the country experience failure in a sport? (e.g. losing a final at the World Cup). Can you
give an example of a sporting failure and then possible acts of poor behaviour seen by fans?
Explain why CCTV is used at sports events? What's a positive of CCTV usage? How does the Police support sports events?
Why do some sports have hooligans? What's the effects of hooligans on sport? Why don’t teams want hooligans related to
them?
Mr Gibbison’s Crime/anti-social behaviour example (just a start)-
Poor behaviour and crime can happen in any town but if
you get people participating in sports, this type of behaviour will decrease. In some areas, certain clubs (boxing clubs, football
teams and youth clubs) have sprung up so that people can escape everyday life/stress and take their aggression out by
playing sport rather than on other people. These sports are often targeted at…….because………… These clubs give people a
focus and this leads to less anti-social behaviour. Sports create a feel good factor when success is seen and this can reduce
crime but also increase crime when failure occurs. Sports facilities have CCTV which monitors behaviour of players and fans
so they are able to deal with incidents quicker and this has led to a reduction in violence in football grounds.

Public services
Who do we class as public services?
Public services include anyone who provides a service to people, such as the Police and
other response services.
(name some others)
Why are public services needed at sports events? What are they there for?
How can they positively support with sport (think of ambulance staff at sports events/police).
On the other hand, how does sport have a negative impact on our public services?
If an ambulance has to be at a
professional rugby game for safety reasons, it means less ambulance for the general public. This is bad because……(
give your
opinion).
Explain who pays for public services at sports events? (mix between the clubs themselves and tax payers).
Is this fair on taxpayers? (give your opinion)
Explain and give examples of a sports events/match, where extra police may be needed due to concerns over potential
violence (local derbies, important games, oversees teams). Why are they needed?

Education
Sport can be very educational for a range of people.
How does education and sport link? What can be learnt from playing or watching sport? (give a couple of points)
Positives of education through sport? (gain qualifications, courses paid for by clubs, on the job training)
Explain that playing sport provides more focus to your learning/education
Negatives of education through sport? (a lot of sports people don’t value education, only focus on money, not taught by
teachers, poor quality courses, not motivated to study).
Many young people that are good at sport are not encouraged to
focus on their education by professional teams. This is bad because……(
give your opinion)
What do most sports now aim for in terms of links to education and qualifications? (can you give examples?)
Explain that most clubs now have academies in which you play sport on a regular basis but they also focus on ensuring you
complete some educational courses such as GCSE PE, BTEC sport or CNAT Sport.
If sports careers don’t work out, why it is important to have good qualifications?
Many ‘insert any sport’ dreams come to an
end at the age of 16 due to being not good enough to make it professional. Therefore, its important to have qualifications
because….

you can)
Why do foreign people want to invest in UK sport? (e.g. want to achieve success, spread their name, spend their money)
How does foreign investment boost a countries economy?

this. This can boost the countries economy because…..
Explain that other countries pay millions of £’s to show sports on TV from other countries.(e.g. Sky TV pays to show the NBA
in the UK).
Why would they do this? How does this impact on the countries economies?
Mr Gibbison’s example for Foreign investment –
When people from abroad invest in a sports team in the UK, this is called
foreign investment. As sport is growing, so is investment. In certain sports, clubs have been taken over by people from other
countries. An example of this is some people from American own Manchester United FC. They are called………… They have

Productivity
Success in sport can mean that we see either positive benefits or negative impacts.
Explain that sport can impact on how productive someone is (how effective they are) (‘feel good’ factor)
How can
success improve
effectiveness in the workplace? (if England win a football match, how may this impact people at
work or school the following day?
How can a
defeat impact
effectiveness in the workplace? (if England lost a rugby match, how may this impact people at work
or school the following day?
If England lost the final of the Rugby World Cup, this may cause some people to be very upset
and therefore not be focussed at work the following day because
…………(sick days, mind elsewhere, annoyed, angry, mental
health).
This would effect the economy because
………(loss of earnings, puts pressure on other workers, sick pay, cover
implications)
Think about the recent World cup in Russia in 2018. What impact did that have on England as a whole country? How would
this reflect in terms of the economy? Look at positive and negatives here.
Sports often involves working in teams? How can these skills transfer to every day life? How could this improve people whilst
at work themselves and help make more money for businesses?

Increased participation in sport to improve health
It is widely understood that participation in sports can improve your health because…….
Who is responsible for improving participation levels? (Government, councils, Doctors, us as individuals)
What facilities are available to improve participation in sports? (any new ones recently?)
Provide reasons why it is easy to participate in sports? (do they all cost to use them?)
Give 2 examples of sports you can participate in that will improve your health? What parts of your health will it improve?
Why do we want more people to participate in sport linked to health?
Mr Gibbison’s example.…
People who are involved in the sports industry know that playing sport can improve your health. Therefore they want more
people to participate in a range of sports. Taking part in sport is now easy due to facilities provided to get people involved. Some
of these facilities are free, such as walking in Clumber Park and some require payment each month, such as attending Oak Tree
Lane gym. Sports equipment is often cheap and available and means you can easily take part. There are now many different
facilities easily accessible within communities such as, BMX tracks and skate parks. These help increase participation levels. Also,
parks are used for walking and jogging round which increases participation and is good for your health. The more people that
participate, will lead to healthier people and families and put less pressure on the NHS. Some people participate to improve the
way they look. Sports compete against each other to get more people to participate in their sport. This is why you see adverts
for sports.

Example;
some sportswomen such as Katrina Johnson
Thomson promote sports drinks such as Lucozade. Lucozade promote their product as a positive to your health and

  4. LO4-Understand the Social impacts of the sports industry

  5. Mr Mr Gibbison s Gibbison sguidance and support guidance and support- -always link to the social aspects/people always link to the social aspects/people A potential model answer that could be used for one of the areas is shown on this slide. Useful tips are also given for other areas **Use different sports in your examples** Sentence starter ideas in purple but try and come up with your own Culture Explain that your experience of sport will depend on your own culture/your experiences of society? Explain how your upbringing me impact on your participation in sport? If I come from a really supportive family that actively play sports themselves, I am more likely to take part in sport myself because (you could talk about following family members into similar sports and reasons behind this) Explain the opposite effect on participation in sport? (e.g. coming from a non supportive family ). How may your culture impact on which sports you may participate in? Can you give examples of sports that people of certain cultures may not participate in? and why this is the case? How does location effect involvement in sport? If I lived in a small village, in a rural area, I am likely to participate in .because Whereas if I lived in a city I am more likely to Explain that different sports/club target people from different cultures. Can you give examples of this? Mr Gibbison s example for Culture (just a start!) Your living location could impact on what sports you experience. For example, if you live in a city you have access to fitness suites; swimming pools and this will make it easier for you to participate in sport. If you live in the middle of nowhere, you might not have the facilities and you might not have the transport to be able to get to the nearest facilities this will make it difficult for you to participate.

  6. Mr Mr Gibbison s Gibbison sguidance and support guidance and support- -always link to the social aspects/people always link to the social aspects/people A potential model answer that could be used for one of the areas is shown on the slides above. Useful tips are also given for other areas **Use different sports in your examples** Sentence starter ideas in purple but try and come up with your own Identity Identity is what you associate to things- such as a person or a place. It is important to try and create a positive identity. Explain that sports and sports people want a positive identity/image? Why? Give an example (in your opinion) of a person or a place that has a positive identity? And explain why? e.g Jessica Ennis is a person who has a positive identity amongst the media and her fellow athletes. This is because .. Explain and give examples of how new or old equipment/facilities give a place/sport an identity. How would this identity impact of sports participation? e.g South forest swimming pool is now quite old and run down. Some people think it s a poor swimming venue and this gives the facility a bad identity. This could impact on participation in swimming because If you host a good/bad event- how would this impact on participation or impressions? (Can you give examples?) What identity does a good/bad event give to the host country? (you could talk about the shop window effect)

  7. Mr Mr Gibbison s Gibbison sguidance and support guidance and support- -always link to the social aspects/people always link to the social aspects/people A potential model answer that could be used for one of the areas is shown on the slides above. Useful tips are also given for other areas **Use different sports in your examples** Sentence starter ideas in purple but try and come up with your own Environment The environment is the location and surroundings that we live in. Does sport improve environments? (Can you give examples to support and argue against?). Think of a new sports facility being built- name the facility and explain how it might have improved or damaged the environment? e.g Mansfield Town FC have just built a training facility is Pleasley. This was built on some old waste land so .. Explain that when new facilities are built, the impact on the environment needs to be considered. Such as; Transport? What's the impacts on the road (and pollution) of high numbers of people attending sports events. Animals? Energy? e.g New sports facilities being built try and consider energy usage of the facility. This is because . Health? Linked to sports participation levels; why do councils want to keep green spaces . (what are they used for? Who by? Why are they important?)

  11. LO4-Understand the Social impacts of the sports industry

  12. Social impact of the sports industry Social impact of the sports industry Question: what do we mean by social ? What key words can you think of? Task- In your assignment you need to show your knowledge (from RO51 unit- contemporary issues in sport) of the social impacts of the sports industry. You need to explain, in details, how the following areas are effected socially by sport; Crime/anti-social behaviour* Public services* Education* Culture Identity Environment

  13. Mr Mr Gibbison s Gibbison sguidance and support guidance and support- -always link to the social aspects/people always link to the social aspects/people A potential model answer that could be used for one of the areas is shown below. Useful tips are also given for other areas **Use different sports in your examples** Sentence starter ideas in purple but try and come up with your own Crime/anti-social behaviour Lots of crime and poor behaviour can be seen in the UK. Being involved in sport can lead to a decrease in crime/poor behaviour because .(give your own opinion) Which genders and age groups are targeted through sport when trying to reduce crimes? Why are they focussed on? Give an example of a sport that you could get involved in? and explain why it may reduce the chances of you becoming involved in crime instead? In Warsop, I could attend the local gym. This would give me the chance to stay fit in an evening and also keep me off the streets. This is good because ..(make reference to crime/poor behaviour) Why does crime levels increase when the country experience failure in a sport? (e.g. losing a final at the World Cup). Can you give an example of a sporting failure and then possible acts of poor behaviour seen by fans? Explain why CCTV is used at sports events? What's a positive of CCTV usage? How does the Police support sports events? Why do some sports have hooligans? What's the effects of hooligans on sport? Why don t teams want hooligans related to them? Mr Gibbison s Crime/anti-social behaviour example (just a start)- Poor behaviour and crime can happen in any town but if you get people participating in sports, this type of behaviour will decrease. In some areas, certain clubs (boxing clubs, football teams and youth clubs) have sprung up so that people can escape everyday life/stress and take their aggression out by playing sport rather than on other people. These sports are often targeted at .because These clubs give people a focus and this leads to less anti-social behaviour. Sports create a feel good factor when success is seen and this can reduce crime but also increase crime when failure occurs. Sports facilities have CCTV which monitors behaviour of players and fans so they are able to deal with incidents quicker and this has led to a reduction in violence in football grounds.

  14. Mr Mr Gibbison s Gibbison sguidance and support guidance and support- -always link to the social aspects/people always link to the social aspects/people A potential model answer that could be used for one of the areas is on the previous slides. Useful tips are also given for other areas **Use different sports in your examples** Sentence starter ideas in purple but try and come up with your own Public services Who do we class as public services? Public services include anyone who provides a service to people, such as the Police and other response services. (name some others) Why are public services needed at sports events? What are they there for? How can they positively support with sport (think of ambulance staff at sports events/police). On the other hand, how does sport have a negative impact on our public services? If an ambulance has to be at a professional rugby game for safety reasons, it means less ambulance for the general public. This is bad because (give your opinion). Explain who pays for public services at sports events? (mix between the clubs themselves and tax payers). Is this fair on taxpayers? (give your opinion) Explain and give examples of a sports events/match, where extra police may be needed due to concerns over potential violence (local derbies, important games, oversees teams). Why are they needed?

  15. Mr Mr Gibbison s Gibbison sguidance and support guidance and support- -always link to the social aspects/people always link to the social aspects/people A potential model answer that could be used for one of the areas is shown on the slides above. Useful tips are also given for other areas **Use different sports in your examples** Sentence starter ideas in purple but try and come up with your own Education Sport can be very educational for a range of people. How does education and sport link? What can be learnt from playing or watching sport? (give a couple of points) Positives of education through sport? (gain qualifications, courses paid for by clubs, on the job training) Explain that playing sport provides more focus to your learning/education Negatives of education through sport? (a lot of sports people don t value education, only focus on money, not taught by teachers, poor quality courses, not motivated to study). Many young people that are good at sport are not encouraged to focus on their education by professional teams. This is bad because (give your opinion) What do most sports now aim for in terms of links to education and qualifications? (can you give examples?) Explain that most clubs now have academies in which you play sport on a regular basis but they also focus on ensuring you complete some educational courses such as GCSE PE, BTEC sport or CNAT Sport. If sports careers don t work out, why it is important to have good qualifications? Many insert any sport dreams come to an end at the age of 16 due to being not good enough to make it professional. Therefore, its important to have qualifications because .

(e.g. want to achieve success, spread their name, spend their money) How does foreign investment boost a countries economy? When a person invests in a sports team, they have to pay to do this. This can boost the countries economy because .. Explain that other countries pay millions of s to show sports on TV from other countries.(e.g. Sky TV pays to show the NBA in the UK). Why would they do this? How does this impact on the countries economies? Mr Gibbison s example for Foreign investment When people from abroad invest in a sports team in the UK, this is called foreign investment. As sport is growing, so is investment. In certain sports, clubs have been taken over by people from other countries. An example of this is some people from American own Manchester United FC. They are called They have invested a lot of money to attempt to make them successful and . Other examples of foreign investment includes . . Explain that sport can impact on how productive someone is (how effective they are) ( feel good factor) How can success improve effectiveness in the workplace? (if England win a football match, how may this impact people at work or school the following day? How can a defeat impact effectiveness in the workplace? (if England lost a rugby match, how may this impact people at work or school the following day? If England lost the final of the Rugby World Cup, this may cause some people to be very upset and therefore not be focussed at work the following day because (sick days, mind elsewhere, annoyed, angry, mental health). This would effect the economy because (loss of earnings, puts pressure on other workers, sick pay, cover implications) Think about the recent World cup in Russia in 2018. What impact did that have on England as a whole country? How would this reflect in terms of the economy? Look at positive and negatives here. Sports often involves working in teams? How can these skills transfer to every day life? How could this improve people whilst at work themselves and help make more money for businesses?

This increased tourism improves the economy because .(provide your own opinions) Can you name sporting events that would improve tourism for a specific country and explain why? (aim for 2 events to explain). When the Austrian F1 race is held in Austria, this boosts tourism because .. Why does this bring money into the country? What do people spend the money on when they visit a sports event? What types of businesses/industries benefit from increased tourism? (e.g food, transport, hotels, drinks, merchandise) Explain that packages can be brought linked to sports events (transport, event tickets, food, hotels included) Why do the countries themselves want to more tourists? Russia wanted to host the 2018 Football World Cup because (link to tourism) Describe the shop window effect (what is it? How does it link to sport? Why is it important for countries?)

  33. Title LO4-Understand the Health impacts of the sports industry

  34. Health impact of the sports industry Health impact of the sports industry Question: what do we mean by health ? Task- In your assignment you need to show your knowledge (from RO51 unit- contemporary issues in sport) of the health impacts of the sports industry. You need to explain, in details, how the following areas are effected socially by sport; Increased participation in sport to improve health Increased awareness of health and the importance of sport Research that impacts on health

  35. Mr Mr Gibbison s Gibbison s guidance and support guidance and support A potential model answer that could be used for one of the areas is shown below. Useful tips are also given for other areas **Use different sports in your examples ** Sentence starter ideas in purple but try and come up with your own Increased participation in sport to improve health It is widely understood that participation in sports can improve your health because . Who is responsible for improving participation levels? (Government, councils, Doctors, us as individuals) What facilities are available to improve participation in sports? (any new ones recently?) Provide reasons why it is easy to participate in sports? (do they all cost to use them?) Give 2 examples of sports you can participate in that will improve your health? What parts of your health will it improve? Why do we want more people to participate in sport linked to health? Mr Gibbison s example. People who are involved in the sports industry know that playing sport can improve your health. Therefore they want more people to participate in a range of sports. Taking part in sport is now easy due to facilities provided to get people involved. Some of these facilities are free, such as walking in Clumber Park and some require payment each month, such as attending Oak Tree Lane gym. Sports equipment is often cheap and available and means you can easily take part. There are now many different facilities easily accessible within communities such as, BMX tracks and skate parks. These help increase participation levels. Also, parks are used for walking and jogging round which increases participation and is good for your health. The more people that participate, will lead to healthier people and families and put less pressure on the NHS. Some people participate to improve the way they look.
