Min Bias Trigger Detector for Heavy Ion Collisions
Re-using PHENIX BBC, this project aims to provide a high-efficiency min-bias trigger for heavy ion collisions with a z-vertex resolution of at least 2.5 cm. It contributes to reaction plane determination and start time in sPHENIX.

WBS 1.7: Min Bias Trigger Detector Mickey Chiu July 13-14, 2017 BNL 1 sPHENIX Director's Review 07/13/17
WBS 1.7: Overview 1. Expected that we can re-use the PHENIX BBC 128 ch s of 3 cm thick quartz radiator on mesh dynode PMTs 2. Provide min-bias trigger with high efficiency for heavy ion collisions (>85%) Needs online z-vertex resolution of at least 2.5 cm, ie, 120 ps/ch 3. Contribute to reaction plane and start time 2 sPHENIX Director's Review 07/13/17

Both options require splitting the signal. One is a shaped pulse for energy measurement. The other is a square ~1V discriminator signal (for timing at trigger level and precisiong timing in offline). or is a ramp and hold on a comparator (TAC) that is input to the digitizer 4 sPHENIX Director's Review 07/13/17

WBS 1.7: BoE Documents Do testing of PHENIX BBC PMTs with laser and in magnetic field to understand their parameters for operation in sPHENIX. sPHENIX WBS 1.7.1: Testing of BBC PMTs 4/13/17 DESCRIPTION MANUFACTURER PART NO. QUANT. VENDOR UNIT COST COST Laser Accessories Travel to Magnet Facility PiLas 1PiLas 2 2000 1500 2000 3000 TOTAL COST: 5000 Standard rates for travel were assumed ($1500/person). The cost for the laser accessories were based on previous purchases of similar items. A disc/shaper prototype board will be developed to stretch the PMT pulses to be optimized for the sampling frequency of the sPHENIX 60 MHz ADC digitizers. The board will create a fast discriminator circuit capable of satisfying the sPHENIX Min Bias trigger timing requirements, which is 50 ps in offline and 120 ps at the L1 trigger level. sPHENIX WBS 1.7.2: Discriminator/Shaper Board R&D 4/13/17 DESCRIPTION MANUFACTURER PART NO. Nevis has made a great many boards of similar complexity over the past few decades. 10 sPHENIX Director's Review 07/13/17

For the Disc/Shaper Board, the cost basis is based on experience from the physicists/engineers at Nevis Labs, who have built similar boards. That s the complete project! 11 sPHENIX Director's Review 07/13/17
