Measuring calf circumference in adults From 18 years old onwards
Summary of the procedure Calf circumference is only measured in adults age 18 years and up Measure on the LEFT leg Use a spring-wound measuring tape. If a spring-wound tape is not available, a regular tape measure can also be used. Hands-on Anthropometry Module 9 Measuring Calf Circumference
Prepare for the measurement 1. Ask the person to uncover the lower leg 2. Let the person sit on a chair or stool 1. Thigh parallel to the floor 2. Knee bent at ninety degrees 3. Lower leg at right angle to the floor 3. Ask the person to relax their leg Hands-on Anthropometry Module 9 Measuring Calf Circumference
Take the measurement 4. Place the measuring tape around the widest part of the calf Make sure the tape runs at a right angle to the shin bone Slide the pin on the end of the tape into the plastic casing Press the button to pull the tape snug against the skin Check that it isn t too tight! 5. Read the measurement at the edge of the plastic casing Too loose Too tight Hands-on Anthropometry Module 9 Measuring Calf Circumference
Record and repeat the measurement 6. Record the measurement Anthropometrist calls out the measurement Assistant records it on the form / app next to 1 7. Repeat the measurement Record on the form/app next to 2 8. Thank the person 9. Check that the measurement is recorded clearly and legibly Hands-on Anthropometry Module 9 Measuring Calf Circumference
