  3. Personal Narrative Essay Recounts an event, or tells a story to illustrate an idea, make a point, or teach a lesson. 3

  4. It is autobiographical - its about YOU! Tells the story of one experience from your life. It is about something MEANINGFUL that you have experienced in your life. 4

  5. Where do I start? 5

  6. Essay Topic Write Write a personal narrative about an experience that you feel influenced you to be the person you are today. 6

  7. Reflect: 1. What did you learn? 2. Why was the experience meaningful? 3. Why was this important? If you can answer these questions fully, you probably have enough material for an essay. 7

  8. Think about the following prompts: 1. Most of my values and beliefs stem from what my family has taught me to be important. 2. You can usually figure out a person s identity by looking at their appearance. 3. My true identity is not the same as what others might perceive it to be. 4. I consider my ethnicity to be a big part of my identity. 8

  9. Main Idea The main idea contains your opinion about the topic. It shows what direction you are going to take in writing about the topic. It helps the reader understand your purpose for writing the the essay. 9

  10. An INTRODUCTION that gets the readers attention - HOOK your reader. A consistent point of view: Write in the first person. Use the words I , we , me , and us 10

  11. The BODY of your essay: Your essay should have a logical order. Arrange events in order so your story makes sense. The most common order would be chronological order. 11

  12. Good details and word choices are essential. Choose important details and words carefully Use strong imagery to help the reader visualize the action . 12

  13. Include thoughts and feelings in your essay. Your emotions and thoughts are what make the story personal and interesting. 13

  14. Share the meaning in your conclusion! Get to the point! Explain why this event made a difference in your life. Why was this meaningful? Includes a lasting lesson or message to the reader in the story s resolution / conclusion 14
