Mastering Quoting in Essays for Academic Excellence

Using Quotes in an Essay

The author’s words –WORD FOR
WORD—go in quotes.

The page number needs to be after
the quotes
Embedding a Quote

Many high school students would
agree that school uniforms can be
detrimental to a student’s self-
esteem and a hindrance to their
creativity
” (48).
Sometimes called a Half-n-Half

Which part belongs to the student? Which part belongs to the
author?

Despite the many criticisms, uniforms
offer
“comfort and continuity”
and
allow students to

“feel as if they fit in
with their peers”
 (75).
What to do and what not to do
The following quote is from S.L. Rottman’s
Hero
.
It’s the things you do in life, not the things you see.
Page 80
Said by: Mr. Hassler
Here’s what I CAN’T do:
Mr. Hassler gave Sean a lot of good advice. “It’s the things
you do in life, not the things you see.”
There are two things wrong with this. Can you find them?

It’s a floating quote – it’s just stuck in there.
And there’s no . . . What?
So . . . How do I make that work?
It’s the things you do in life, not the things you see.
Page 80
Said by: Mr. Hassler

One of the many lessons Sean learned from
Mr. Hassler was that
“it’s the things you do
in life, not the things you see” (90).
How would you work in this quote?
Page 90
Mr. Hassler
I’m your parent while you’re on my ranch

Mr. Hassler went above and beyond the call
of duty when he told Sean
,
“I’m your parent
while you’re on my ranch” (90).
Here’s one idea:
Sometimes – a quote needs to be
tweaked
Page 90
Sean
I looked at him. I didn’t know what to say. He wasn’t required to take care of me;
he had volunteered to do it. He could have kicked me out whenever he wanted to.
Sean changed his opinion of his situation when he realized
that Mr. Hassler “wasn’t required to take care of me; he had
volunteered to do it” (90).
Does this work? Why or why not?
Which word/s would you change?
Sean changed his opinion of his situation when he realized
that Mr. Hassler “wasn’t required to take care of
him
; he had
volunteered to do it” (90)

YIKES!!!! we
can’t
do it that way. Rottman didn’t write it
this way – and if we put it in quote marks, it means this is
WORD FOR WORD.
But – here’s what we CAN do
. . .
Sean changed his opinion of his situation when he realized
that Mr. Hassler “wasn’t required to take care of
[him]
; he had
volunteered to do it” (90)
If you put words in brackets – it’s important that they MEAN THE SAME THING
as the words you’re replacing.
THIS IS VERY, VERY important!

Good example:
“Angelina Jolie is the daughter of actor Jon Voight, but he
didn’t do too much to help his daughter get started in the
business” (37).
Angelina is a successful actress on her own steam.
Even though acting is a family business, “
[father Jon
Voight]
didn’t do much to help his daughter get
started in the business” (37).

EEEEEEVIL example:
“Angelina Jolie is the daughter of actor Jon Voight, but he
didn’t do too much to help his daughter get started in the
business” (37).
Angelina is a successful actress on her own
steam. Even though acting is a family
business, “
[sister Gina Greenway]
didn’t do
much to help
[her sister]
 get started in the
business” (37).

Sean
I didn’t know what to say. He wasn’t required to take care of me; he had
volunteered to do it. He could have kicked me out whenever he wanted to.
But, even though he hadn’t known what I was doing, even though I hadn’t told
him what was going on, he accepted me.
Sean recognized that Mr. Hassler
“wasn’t required to
take care of [him]”
(90) and could have left Sean to
fend for himself.
When Sean is thinking about what makes a person a
hero, he came to the realization that Mr. Hassler stuck
by him, and
“he could have kicked [him] out
whenever he wanted to”
(90).

Grab a shoulder partner and try!
______________________________________ when he
realized that Mr. Hassler “wasn’t required to take care of
______” (90).

Work any part of the following quote into an essay sentence. Don’t forget your in-text
citation:

He looked at me. “They needed help. I helped them. That’s not
going above and beyond the call of duty. That’s merely being
human.”

Page 71

He looked at me. “They needed help. I helped them. That’s not going above
and beyond the call of duty. That’s merely being human.”

Sean learns that Mr. Hassler doesn’t consider saving the
lives of his men to be heroic; he considers it
“merely being
human”
 (71).

Mr. Hassler’s motto is simple: if people need help, he steps
in. He does not consider this
“going above and beyond the
call of duty”
(71).

When Mr. Hassler was in the military, he stated that
“[the
men in my unit] needed help. I helped them”
(71).
