Global Perspectives Mrs. Oels
About Mrs. Oels The 2021-2022 school year is my 24th year of teaching - all of which has been done at SPFHS! In addition to one section of Global Perspectives, I also teach three sections of You & the Law and one section of AP U.S. Government & Politics. I also serve as one of the co-advisors to Model UN. Previously I taught both World History as well as U.S. History I. I have taught global perspectives since we created the course 11 years ago. I completed my undergraduate studies at Muhlenberg College. Since then I have taken masters coursework in Criminal Justice through Boston University and completed the James Madison Fellowship in American History at Princeton University and the Choices Fellowship in Global Studies at Brown University. Please feel free to contact me at any time via email: boels@spfk12.org
About the Course This course was created a replacement to the old World History course. Instead of having students focus on world events that happened several hundred years ago, the social studies teachers of SPFHS worked together to create a course that focus on recent world history. The idea is to help students become active global citizens by helping them understand why the world is the way it is today. This course is a true social studies course as we complete units dealing not only with history, but also with current events, civics, geography, sociology, economics, philosophy, and more.
What we study: 5 major units Unit 1: Perspectives - Diversity and Universality This unit focuses on identity, culture, and different perspectives. Students will learn how to think outside their own box as we use sociology, current events, and more to help develop identities as global citizens. Unit 2: Human Rights Now that students have a basic understanding of culture and the rights they have as American citizens, we expand on the knowledge of rights in the world. This unit includes some controversial studies, including child rights and women s rights throughout the world. Unit 3: Political & Economic Globalization This unit focuses on different political and economic systems throughout the world. Students will understand how different countries handle problems, including human rights, trade, and more. Unit 4: Conflict - Peace and War This unit focuses on various types of conflict and how those conflicts are solved. Topics may include terrorism, nuclear warfare, and specific conflicts between countries. This unit is most like a typical history class, but the conflicts focused on are relevant to today. Unit 5: Planet Health/Human Health This unit combines the previous four units for our conclusion. In looking at world problems today such as climate change, students will understand how perspectives, human rights, globalization, and conflict are present in the world today and how they are connected.
Helpful Technology Google Classroom - all classwork, homework, slideshows, etc. will be posted here. Use your child s school email to login. Their password is their student ID number. This will enable you to see their actual assignments rather than just get a report. Remind - Students are encouraged to sign up for this service to get reminders sent directly to their phone. They may also message me through this service. If you would like to add it, text @oelsglobal to 81010 or download the app.
Assessment Techniques Full grading policy explained in Class Guidelines (available on Google Classroom and gone over with the students on the first day of school.) No textbook this class is a discussion and research based class. Most assignments will require students to do some form of research and discuss it either orally in a large or small group or submit a written assignment based on the research. No typical tests The majority of assessments, even once we return to school, will be open-note. Students will learn how to complete proper research with good sources. They will often be able to look up information needed while taking an assessment Project based assessments will also be given throughout the year E-A-C Grading for opinion-based assignments Evidence Who/What/Where/When? (Did you answer the basic parts of the question?) Analysis Why/How? (How did you support your argument?) Clarity basic organization/spelling/grammar
If you have questions or would like to discuss your childs progress, please feel free to email me at boels@spfk12.org
