The History of Poetry Poetry (the term derives from a variant of the Greek term, poiesis, "making") is one of the oldest genres in literary history that uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language such as phonaesthetics, sound symbolism, and metre to evoke meanings. The earliest poetry is believed to have been recited or sung, employed as a way of remembering oral history, genealogy, and law. For example the Germanic oral poetry which survives fro the end of Roman Empire, found in writings from Austria to Iceland, has a common form, technique and formulatic repertoire. The oldest surviving speculative fiction poem is the Tale of the Shipwrecked Sailor, written in Hieratic and ascribed a date around 2500 B.C.E The earliest known English poem is a hymn on the creation; Bede attributes this to C dmon (fl. 658 680), who was, according to legend, an illiterate herdsman who produced extemporaneous poetry at a monastery at Whitby. This is generally taken as marking the beginning of Anglo- Saxon poetry.
