( Changing Narration if the Reported Speech is
imperative/Optative/Exclamatory )
 
Learning outcomes:
 
After the lesson the students will be able to
Change the Narration if the Reported Speech is
Imperative
Change the Narration if the Reported Speech is
Optative
Change the Narration if the reported Speech is
Exclamatory
 
Remember:
 
If the Reported Speech is Imperative:
 
Repoting Verb will be changed according to the meaning of Reported
Speech
Propose/suggest will be used if the Reported Speech denotes
“Proposal”    (In case of Imperative with “Let”)
“Should” will be used in the Reported Speech if it denotes Proposeal
but if doesn’t “might/might be allowed to” will be used (In case of
Imperative with “Let”)
“To/not to” will be used to connect Imperative without Let
“that” will be used to connect Imperative with Let
Let’s see some examples:
 
 
Change the
speeches into
Indirect:
 
The teacher said to the students,  “Sit down.”
Indirect: The teacher ordered the students to sit down.
Mother said to her son, “Don’t run in the sun.”
Indirect: Mother forbade her son to run in the son.
My friend said to me, “Let’s play football.”
Indirect: My friend proposed to me that we should play
football.
The boss said to the gateman,  “Let me go out.”
Indirect : The boss ordered the gateman that he (the boss)
might go out.
 
 
Explanation
1.
“Order” was used as the reported speech denotes “Order”. “ to” was
used as the connector as the Reported Speech beng Imperative without
“let”.
2.
“Forbade” was used as the Reported Speech denotes “Prohibition” and if
we use forbade  “to”will be used instead of “not to” as connector.
3. “Propose” was used as the Reported Speech denotes “proposal” and that
was used as the Reported Speech is Imperative with “let”.
4. Might” was used as the Reported Speech didn’t denote “proposal”
 
Pair work
Change the speeches into Indirect:
Mumin said to his sister, “Let’s do
the sum.”
Indirect: Mumin suggested to his sister
that they should do the sum.
Ruksana said to her classmate,
“Please, lend me your pencil. “
Indirect: Ruksana requested her
classmate to lend her(Ruksana) his
(classmate) pencil.
Let’s try again.
Change the speeches:
1.
Our head teacher said, ‘May our Prime Minister live long.”
Indirect: Our head teacher wished that our Prime Minister might live long.
2.  The visitors said, “How nice Bangladesh is!”
Indirect: The visitors exclaimed with wonder/joy that Bangladesh was very nice.
 
Explanation
1.
Since the reported speech is
Optative, “wish” was used as
reporting verb.
2.
Exclaimed was used as the
Reported Speech was Exclamatory

that Bangladesh might live
long.
2. She said, “What a fool
the boy is!”
Indirect: She exclaimed with
regret that the boy was a
great fool.
