CSE Style This tutorial provides instruction and includes examples for print and online books as well as periodical citations in CSE style.
CSE Style Council of Science Editors (CSE) is commonly used in the sciences. The latest publication is Scientific Style and Format: The CSE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers 8thedition (2014).
Reference Page The heading References is typically used for the citation list in research papers and research projects written in CSE style 3
Author Names Personal names are written last name first A list of author names is separated by a comma with no and before the last name as in some other styles 4
Author Names Use initials for first and middle names, and use NO periods or spaces in between initials Names are listed in the citation as in the same order as in the publication (not necessarily alphabetical) Example: Watson JD, Lee TD, Sanger F. 5
What if there is no author? Start the citation or reference with the article title The second piece of information is the publication date Example: Muhammad Ali and Frazier Clash Sept. 30. Sept 25, 1975. Wichita Times [Wichita, Kansas]. p. 5. See CSE page 566 for details 6
Corporate Names as Authors An organization such as a university, society, association, corporation, or governmental body may serve as an author Ignore the word the if it is the first word in the author name Example: The American Chemical Society becomes American Chemical Society when it appears as an author See CSE chapter 29.3.6.1.2 for more details 7
Journal Abbreviations All CSE styles require the use of journal abbreviations in the reference list Single-word journal titles are not abbreviated 8
Journal Abbreviations Find journal abbreviations by searching journal abbreviations on the web ISSN website includes List of Title Word Abbreviations More information about journal abbreviations is found in CSE Appendix 29.1 9
Other Notes about CSE Style A DOI is required, if available, although other information about electronic access is not necessary for items retrieved from common library databases Remember to pay close attention to capitalization, spacing, and all types of punctuation. (There is no italicization as in some other styles.) 10
Variations of CSE Citation-sequence Citation-name Name-year These styles affect in-text citations as well as the reference list, which must support each other. See chapter 29.2 in the CSE for more information about the various styles.
CSE Citation-Sequence Reference List Organize the references/citations within the list in the order in which they first appear within the text Disregard alphabetical order Number the first item in the reference list 1 and continue numbering the list sequentially
CSE Citation-Name Reference Lists Alphabetize the reference list and then number the list Use these numbers in the in-text citations Pros and cons: Using numbers in the in-text citations saves space, but it prevents the reader from instantly knowing the author of the citation and requires altering the numbers during the draft stage of writing.
CSE CS/CN (Citation-Sequence and Citation-Name) Reference Lists Both styles require numbering the references or citations on the reference list page Both styles put the publication date after the journal title and before the volume number. If there is no author, start the citation with the article title
About the Example Patterns in this Tutorial Words within left and right chevron or arrow heads are added for explanation. For example <if available> means that the item is included if that information is available. Items in red indicate that the item is written exactly this way For example doi # means the word doi must be included and the DOI number must be added by the researcher/writer to look like this in the citation: doi 10.1017/S0009640714001747 15
CSE CS/CN Pattern for an Online Journal Article Citation Author(s). Article title. Periodical title abbreviation. Publication year volume(issue): page range. doi # <if available>
CSE CS/CN Online Journal Article Citation Example Wiley AN. The Dunbar High School Dilemma. Build Landsc. 2013 20(1): 95-128. 17
CSE CS/CN Journal Citation with Less than 10 Authors Hotchkiss AK, Ankley GT, Wilson VS, Hartig PC, Durhan EJ, Jensen KM, Martinovi D, Gray LE Jr. Of mice and men (and mosquitofish): Antiandrogens and androgens in the environment. Bioscience. 2008 58(11): 1037-1050. doi: 10.164/B581107
CSE CS/CN Pattern for Online Newspaper Article Citation Author(s). Article title. Newspaper Full Title (edition &/or state postal abbreviation) <if newspaper is not well known>. year, month abbreviation, day [accessed year, month abbreviation, day]; Sect. section name or number:page if available. URL.
CSE CS/CN Online Newspaper Article Citation Example Siebenmark J, Aircraft interiors firm approved for Challenger, Phenom jets. The Wichita Eagle (KS). 2016 Jul, 6 [accessed 2016 Jul, 9]; Sect. Aviation. http://www.kansas.com.

CSE Name-Year Citation Style The major differences between CS/CN and name-year CSE citations involve in-text citations, which is not covered in this tutorial The only difference in the reference list is the location of the publication date
Name-Year Online Journal Article Citation Example Akbas, F, Armstrong, WJ, Sorescu, S, Subrahmanyam, A. 2016. Capital market efficiency and arbitrage efficacy. J Fin Quant Anal. 51(2): 387-413. doi: 10.1017/S0022109016000223
ACTIVITY: Name-Year Journal Article 30
Other Types of Sources There are many other types of sources useful for research projects that are not included in this tutorial. Use Scientific Style and Format for details about citing other types of sources.
