  1. CAE Reading and Use of English Part 7 Exam Technique

  2. This is an example of a part 7 task. There are 12 points available in this part, 2 for each correct answer. Depending on how difficult you find this part decide how much time to give yourself 15/20 minutes.

  3. Whats Tested? This task mainly tests your understanding of how texts are organised: Linkers (however, though, etc.) Reference words (this, that, these, such, etc.)

  4. Exam Technique 1. Read the title and subtitle. 2. Quickly read the main text. While you read, underline the following words after each gap: Pronouns: he / she / it / this / that / these / those / etc. Possessive adjectives: his / her / its etc. Linkers: So, however, but, then, afterwards etc. Other reference words / parts of structures: too / either / parts of conditionals / comparisons. 1. Read the paragraphs and do the same 2. Start trying to fit the text together: Think about what the reference word is referring to: Main text: Some of the brightest brains in physics were tasked with devising methods to reduce the impact of the sun s rays on global temperatures. The scientists came up with 3 solutions. Paragraph G: These included building a sunshield as well as covering the Earth with a type of sunscreen. What s the reference word in G and what is it referring to? 1. Focus closely on the text above and below the gap, try to find the paragraph that fits best: Do the reference words match? (this, it, these, etc.) If two paragraphs seem to fit, write both letters (B, C) and eliminate one later. Let s practice, do steps 1 & 2. - You have 4 minutes.

  5. What clues/reference words did you find after the first gap?

  6. What about the next gap?

  7. What about the next gap?

  8. Other clues for the other gaps. Now do the same for the paragraphs. Here is an example:
