1. LINKING VERBS AND PREDICATE WORDS

2. LINKING VERBS A linking verb connects the subject of a sentence with a predicate word that identifies/renames or describes the subject. Mrs. Herling is my English teacher.

3. PREDICATE WORDS A predicate word Follows a linking verb Identifies or renames the subject. Called a predicate noun He is my friend Describes the subject. Called predicate adjective He is nice.

4. SENTENCE PATTERNS WITH LVS S + LV + PN S + LV + PA Predicate nouns (PN) and predicate adjectives (PA) are called SUBJECT COMPLIMENTS because they always tie back to the SUBJECT in some way! PNs-rename or further identify the subject PAs-describe or modify the subject

5. LINKING VERBS Forms of be - am, are, is ,was, were, be, being, been *Senses- look, appear, taste, smell, feel, sound Others-become, seem, *grow, *stay, *remain, *turn *these verbs can also be action verbs, depending on how they are used in a sentence

6. LV OR AV? A tip for checking to see if a verb is a linking verb vs. an action verb is to substitute the word is/was or are/were for the verb 1. The kitten looks so innocent Linking verb-can replace with is 2. The kitten looks at the bird. Action verb- cannot replace with is ; sentences does not make sense

7. THE CAR TURNED AND WENT THE OPPOSITE DIRECT. 1. LINKING VERB OR 2. ACTION VERB

8. SHE SMELLED THE FLOWERS. 1. LINKING VERB OR 2. ACTION VERB

9. THE PERFUME SMELLED SWEET. 1. LINKING VERB OR 2. ACTION VERB

10. PREDICATE NOUNS A predicate noun always Comes after a linking verb Is a noun or a pronoun that identifies/renames the subject Can be compound Examples 1. Matthew is a student in my class 2. Michele was a member of the club.

11. PREDICATE ADJECTIVE A predicate adjective always Comes after a linking verb Is an adjective that describes the subject Can be compound Examples 1. Matthew is very bright in class. 2. Michele was extremely organized.

12. YOU CAN NOT HAVE BOTH A PN AND A PA FOLLOWING THE SAME LINKING VERB Example: Chocolate is my favorite flavor. Favorite is not a PA it just a regular adjective describing flavor.

13. FINDING PN AND PA 1. Find the verb, and determine if it is a linking verb. Remember the is test. 2. Find the subject 3. In the predicate (AFTER THE LINKING VERB), look for a noun/pronoun that renames/identifies the subject (PN) or an adjective that describes the subject (PA). Example 1. The puppy is a hound. 2. The puppy is a hound. 3. The puppy is a hound.

29. STEPS 1. Find the verb in the sentence The verb is _________ 2. Determine if the verb is action or linking 3. If it is an action verb, it is a DO or IO 4. If it is a linking verb, it is a PN or PA 5. Follow your normal steps that we reviewed in class So lets look at the question again
