LIFE & TRANSITIONS IN MUSIC Uri Kim MUSIC 1 Final presentation
PLAYLIST TOPIC Music and Life Transitions Life transitions can relate to music because it can be considered a universal experience. Whether it s in the form of a simple tapping of the foot while waiting for the elevator, or if it s whistling a tune along with the birds in the morning, music is in every aspect of our lives. It was interesting because it s relatable to everyone, and personally, it s something that has allowed me to feel creativity everywhere. There aren t many things that can be accessed by everyone, and that makes music all the better. It follows hand in hand in daily life, and it s portable, making it easy to access at anytime, for anyone. Whether you re crying because of a death, or whether you re happy because of a promotion at work, music is alongside you, accompaniment for life s ups and downs.
ENTRY 1 Spring Day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEeFrLSkMm8 The context being that they are stuck in the past, with no reformation, nor answer, as to why and how the tragedy had occurred. With its references to The ones who walk away from Omelas and Snowpiercer , the aesthetic imagery doesn t cease to identify the remains of what should have been happiness spring , and instead turned to tragedy, a bleak winter for those involved. It relates to my chosen topic because it s in memory of those whose lives will never get to move forward. Their life transitions halted that day, and it s monumental for their family members, whose lives changed when they found out their children will never come back home to them. A musical characteristic that stands out is that its sorrowful vocal melody, (the key mostly in E-major), and in the textbook it says, some hear the major scale as extroverted and joyful (Ch 2) which couldn t be farther from the truth, even if it s a stereotype that most go by. Even if one doesn t understand the language in which is being sung, they can feel the emotions emitting from it, and it s not joy that comes from listening to it.
ENTRY 2 I see the light" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9SAUq5-V7o The song relates to Life transitions because for the main character in the movie (Rapunzel) her whole life has turned upside down. She s left her godforsaken tower, she is so close to where her parents are, she s in her hometown. She has someone she cares about by her side, who supports her the whole time(in his own unique way) and he too, has found what his life is supposed to mean. To be with her, is his life now, and to him that s what really mattered. The fact that the lyrics It s like the world has shifted is included, along with the consonant harmony of their combined voices at the end from separation as a duet for most of the song. As stated within the textbook, Harmony occurs when at least two different pleasing to our ears are said to be consonant. (ch 2). It is part of her/his life transitions, into more prevalent circumstances, as they understand each other, and how they want their lives to stay connected.
