  1. And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly. And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace: For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publickly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ. (Acts 18:24 28 KJV)

  2. Lessons From Apollos

  3. Lessons From Apollos There are some extremely important lessons that can be learned from Luke s inspired record of the events that took place while Apollos was in Ephesus One May Teach From The Bible And Still Be Wrong Apollos was from Alexandria The Scriptures describe him as an eloquent speaker (18:24) eloquent { ; logios}learned, a man of letters, skilled in literature and the arts; especially versed in history and antiquities. (Thayer) The Apostle Paul stated he sat at the feet of Gamaliel (Acts 22:3) People marveled at the teaching of Jesus because of this Cf (Jn 7:15)

  4. And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned? (John 7:15 KJV) And the Jews marveled, saying, How does this Man know letters, having never studied? (John 7:15 NKJV) The Jews then were astonished, saying, How has this man become learned, having never been educated? (John 7:15 NAS95) The Jews therefore marveled, saying, How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied? (John 7:15 ESV)

  5. Lessons From Apollos There are some extremely important lessons that can be learned from Luke s inspired record of the events that took place while Apollos was in Ephesus One May Teach From The Bible And Still Be Wrong Apollos was mighty in the Scriptures. This would have been the Old Testament at this time. Mighty {dunatos} pertaining to being possible, with the implication of power or ability to alter or control, being strong, or able

  6. And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mightyin words and in deeds. (Acts 7:22 KJV) (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) (2 Corinthians 10:4 KJV) And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is ableto graff them in again. (Romans 11:23 KJV)

  7. Lessons From Apollos There are some extremely important lessons that can be learned from Luke s inspired record of the events that took place while Apollos was in Ephesus One May Teach From The Bible And Still Be Wrong He taught diligently the things concerning the Lord (vs 25) However, his teaching was not complete in scope, because he knew only the baptism of John Did Apollos teach what was required to be saved? Yes, if he had taught it earlier (Mk 1:4; Lk 3:3) John s baptism was ordained of God (Lk 7:24-30; Matt 21:25; Acts 1:22)

  8. Lessons From Apollos Apollos is manly mentioned in the Epistle to the Corinthians We are told in Acts 19:1 that Apollos left Ephesus and went to Corinth What happened when Paul arrived in Ephesus (Acts 19:2-5) He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John s baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (Acts 19:2 5 KJV)

  9. Lessons From Apollos What did Apollos do while in Corinth? And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly. And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace: (Acts 18:26 27 KJV) . And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; andmany of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized. (Acts 18:8 KJV)

  10. Lessons From Apollos Many today are like Apollos Notice what Paul taught while in Ephesus (Acts 20:27) For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. (Acts 20:27 KJV) Paul kept back nothing (vs. 20 Cf Acts 13:24-41 Cf Lk 7:29;) And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house, (Acts 20:20 KJV) Paul taught the truth!

  11. I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.(1 Timothy 2:1 7 KJV)

  12. Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. (2 Timothy 3:5 7 KJV)

  13. Lessons From Apollos There are some extremely important lessons that can be learned from Luke s inspired record of the events that took place while Apollos was in Ephesus Zeal Alone Does Not Justify Men Before God Apollos was fervent in spirit (Acts 18:25) Zeal can be directed incorrectly (Jn 16:1-3) The Jews were zealous, but in their own righteousness (Rom 10:1-4)

  14. Brethren, my hearts desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.(Romans 10:1 4 KJV)

  15. Lessons From Apollos There are some extremely important lessons that can be learned from Luke s inspired record of the events that took place while Apollos was in Ephesus Zeal Alone Does Not Justify Men Before God Apollos was fervent in spirit (Acts 18:25) Zeal can be directed incorrectly (Jn 16:1-3) The Jews were zealous in their own righteousness (Rom 10:1-4) Paul is a perfect example (Acts 23:1; 22:1-5; 1 Tim 1:9-16)

  16. And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day. (Acts 23:1 KJV) Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you. (And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,) I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day. And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women. As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished. (Acts 22:1 5 KJV)

  17. And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. (1 Timothy 1:12 16 KJV)

  18. Lessons From Apollos There are some extremely important lessons that can be learned from Luke s inspired record of the events that took place while Apollos was in Ephesus A Thing Is Not Right Because It Was At One Time The Law of Moses was commanded by God at one time for the Jews, however, it was not for all time (Gal 3:9-13) So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: (Galatians 3:9 13 KJV)

  19. For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof. For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God. (Hebrews 7:18 19 KJV)

  20. Lessons From Apollos There are some extremely important lessons that can be learned from Luke s inspired record of the events that took place while Apollos was in Ephesus A Thing Is Not Right Because It Was At One Time The baptism of John was right at one time (Lk 7:29-30) At one time John s baptism was according to God s will and purpose and was sufficient for salvation (Mk 1:4; Lk 3:3) It was not intended for all time (Lk 24:44; Acts 2:38 Cf Acts 19:4-5)

  21. John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. (Mark 1:4 KJV) And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; (Luke 3:3 KJV) In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. (Matthew 3:1 2 KJV) From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. (Matthew 4:17 KJV)

  22. And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. KJV) Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. (Acts 2:38 KJV) Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (Acts 19:4 5 KJV) (Luke 24:44 47

  23. Lessons From Apollos There are some extremely important lessons that can be learned from Luke s inspired record of the events that took place while Apollos was in Ephesus Those In Error Should Make The Change Apollos had the right heart and changed (Acts 18:26-19:1) Those who Apollos taught the baptism of John changed Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (Acts 19:4-5)

  24. Lessons From Apollos There are some extremely important lessons that can be learned from Luke s inspired record of the events that took place while Apollos was in Ephesus Those In Error Should Make The Change If the seed of God has been planted on the right soil (Lk 8:11- 15) no one will continue in sin (1 Jn 3:7-10)

  25. Little children, make sure no one deceives you; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous; the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother. (1 John 3:7 10 NAS95)

  26. Lessons From Apollos Apollos is mentioned 8 more times in Scripture all but one are in the Corinthian epistle He had a great influence on them as evident in Paul s epistle to them A Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. (1 Corinthians 1:12 KJV) For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal? Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. (1 Corinthians 3:4 6 KJV) And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another. (1 Corinthians 4:6 KJV) As touching our brother Apollos, I greatly desired him to come unto you with the brethren: but his will was not at all to come at this time; but he will come when he shall have convenient time. (1 Corinthians 16:12 KJV)

  27. A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject; Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself. When I shall send Artemas unto thee, or Tychicus, be diligent to come unto me to Nicopolis: for I have determined there to winter. Bring Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently, that nothing be wanting unto them. (Titus 3:10 13 KJV)
