Idioms in the English Language Let s begin! Let s begin!

Students will be able to : understand what an idiom is. 1. 2. recognize the meaning of idioms . 3. explain at least three commonly used idioms in the English language.

What is an idiom? An idiom is a phrase or group of words with a meaning that is not obvious from the individual words. There is a hidden meaning behind the phrase. For example: Raining cats and dogs! Although you know the meaning of rain, cats and dogs you may not understand the sentence if you do not know the idiom.

Some Common Idioms! A piece of cake! This does not mean you have a piece of cake. This idiom means that something you did was very easy. Be in the same boat! This does not mean that you are in a boat with someone. This idiom means that you are in the same situation as someone.

Some Idioms! It cost an arm and a leg Very expensive Have a change of heart Changed your mind Out of the blue With no warning Get your act together Behave properly

Lets Match! Draw a blank! My undivided attention! Too expensive! Call it a day! Time to quit! A rip off! Someone you love or cherish Apple of my eye! Unable to remember! I m all ears!

Please listen and read along to the following paragraph and answer the question on the next slide. I walked to the kitchen to have some breakfast. My little brother was sitting at the table and looked very grumpy. I asked him if he had woke up on the wrong side of the bed. He gave my an angry look and for the rest of the morning he gave me the cold shoulder. My mother came into the kitchen as we were leaving to catch the bus. Today was my play at school and while we were walking out the door she yelled, Bye Amy! Good luck at your play! Break a leg!
