What is a learning disability?
What is a learning disability?
A learning disability is a lifelong
condition.
A learning disability is different for
everyone – no two people are the same.
People with a learning disability can find
it more difficult to learn, understand and
remember information than most
people.
They can find it difficult to do everyday
things like use money, communicate,
take care of themselves and make
friends.
With support, people with a learning
disability can live the life they choose.
Mild
Moderate
Profound
Severe
May need help to
understand new
information, and
some support
with caring for
themselves.
Many will be able
to carry out
everyday tasks
with some
help,
like shopping,
and cooking.
Often use simple
words and
gestures to
communicate.
Many need a lot
of help with
everyday
activities and
some people
may need help
with caring for
themselves.
Need a high level
of care and help
with all parts of
life. Many people
have other
disabilities too
like hearing or
mobility. They
may also have
other health
conditions like
epilepsy.
Need help to
understand
complicated
ideas but can
usually do most
things
themselves like
travel, use money
and read. Some
people can also
have jobs and
drive.
Learning Disabilities
What causes
learning disabilities?
What causes
learning disabilities?
A learning disability occurs when the brain is
still developing (before, during or soon after
birth).
The central nervous system (brain and spinal
cord) can be affected in ways that may lead to
a learning disability. This can happen if
the mother has an accident or illness while she
is pregnant, or if the unborn baby
develops certain genes (genes are chemicals in
our bodies that contain information about us,
like how we look).
A person can be born with a learning disability if
he or she does not get enough oxygen during
childbirth, has trauma to the head, or is born too
early.
After birth, a learning disability can be caused
by early childhood illnesses, accidents and
seizures.

Learning disabilities are lifelong conditions that affect how individuals learn, understand, and remember information. Each person's experience with a learning disability is unique, impacting their everyday tasks and communication abilities. With appropriate support, individuals with learning disabilities can lead fulfilling lives. Causes of learning disabilities include factors during pregnancy, childbirth, and early childhood. Learning Disability Week aims to raise awareness and promote understanding of these challenges.
