Welcome to Key Stage 1! This guide covers important reminders such as school timings, uniform requirements, home learning expectations, rewards and celebrations, and general guidelines for children's safety. Parents are encouraged to stay updated on school activities and support their child's learning journey. Clear communication and involvement are key to a successful Key Stage 1 experience.

  1. Year 1 Curriculum Meeting Welcome to Key Stage 1

  2. Routine Reminders We open the doors at 8:30-8:50am to welcome children in Children arriving after 8:50am will need to sign in at the office It is optional to bring fruit to eat during snack time as school have fruit Every child is expected to have a water bottle in school every day Milk can be ordered via www.coolmilk.com for snack time Please remember to order school lunch via Relish, this cannot be ordered on the day Home time is at 3:10pm. Doors will open at 3.10pm

  3. Other general reminders We ask for All clothing should be clearly labelled including coats, gloves, hats and scarves PE kit (also labelled) should be black joggers/leggings or shorts, a plain white t-shirt, a school jumper/cardigan and either pumps or trainers Children should come to school dressed in their PE kits on their PE days. All jewellery should be removed or covered with plasters Badger Thursday and Friday Hedgehog Wednesday and Thursday Heron Monday and Friday Squirrel Tuesday and Friday

  4. Other general reminders Please ensure children stay with you when walking to and from school and don t run ahead Children should be brought to the door Please ensure children DO NOT play with or on school equipment before or after school Bear with us at home time while we get used to your faces. Our primary concern is the children s safety

  5. Rewards and Celebrations Children may receive a Going for Gold for positive behaviour, upholding school values and for their learning. When they have filled their booklet, they can choose a prize from the headteacher We celebrate a star learner and sports star of the week in class assemblies Children earn reading certificates and prizes for the reading they do at home

  6. Home Learning Expectations Homework will be sent out on a Friday this may be research prior to a topic being taught or consolidation to practise previously taught skills Children should record work in their homework books and bring them in every Thursday so that they can share their work in class on a Friday. Homework is not formally marked Spellings are connected to the phonics taught in class and will be sent home for practise. Children will have the opportunity to practise them in class, but will not have a spelling test

  7. Home Learning Expectations Children will take home a decodable book each week. Children are expected to read this book 3x a week. Day 1 read through the book, day 2 Read the book again using prosody (expression), day 3 read the book again and answer questions on what they have read. Examples of these 3 sessions can be found at the back of each book We subscribe to Big Cat Online books for decodable books. This supports our phonics scheme called Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised Children can record 6 entries (2 books) a week in their home reading record Children can also access Oxford Owl, this is a free online resource which you need to register for Children will also take home a sharing book within a few weeks of starting

School Fund School fund is vital in helping to provide services and equipment not supplied by central government School budgets are very limited and are decreasing We use it to buy ingredients, creative resources, games equipment, plants, etc It can be paid on Parent Pay weekly, termly or as a lump sum: 1 every week pay at the beginning of each term ( 10) (Sept, Jan, April) pay a lump sum of 30 in September

  9. Marvellous Me Please sign up to use Marvellous Me if you haven t already and set it to allow notifications We send all letters, reminders and important messages from school using this method

  10. Things to tell the teacher Phone the school if: your child will be absent from school, you are running late, someone different is collecting your child, you want a message passed on during the day Administering medicines - forms must be completed before we can do this at the office Messages can be given at the door, when the children comes in but these must be brief. Meetings can be arranged if you have any concerns Teachers are available after school most days if you need a little longer to talk to them. If you would rather speak to a teacher over the phone then you can call the school office on 0121 552 1885. You can also send an email to the headteacher on deborah.walker@mfi.school

Little Wandle We have introduced a new phonics scheme called Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised in line with the Government s requirement to have a systematic, synthetic phonics provision in all settings The scheme incorporates the latest research about how children learn best; how to ensure learning stays in children s long term memory and how best to enable children to apply their learning to become highly competent readers

  17. Mastering Number We are part of a Maths hub project that aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and confidence and flexibility with number. Attention is given to the knowledge and understanding needed in Reception, and progression throughout KS1 to support success in the future Children are able to clearly communicate their mathematical ideas It is taught to the whole class and all children take part
