MEANING OF JIHAD

In Arabic language, Jihad means
striving, struggling, exerting effort
to release as much energy as possible in good deeds and legitimate
fields.
The special meaning is
‘fighting’
in the cause of Allah under the
banner of the ruler.
Striving to do one’s best,
in the best manner possible
against all odds (obstacles and hindrances) that stop one
from being good!
Today, we’ll be discussing
Jihad in the general sense of the word...

Jihad in the general sense
Types of Jihad

1)
Jihad against one’s
evil
 soul
(nafs = nafs al ammaaraa bis’suu)
2)
Jihad against the temptations of Shaytaan
(nazagha, waswasa)
3)
Jihad against the hypocrites and infidels
(munafiqoon, kuffaar)
1. Jihad against one’s own soul

1)
Nafs is defined as soul.
   ‘N
afs
’ lexically means, soul, the psyche, ego, self, essence, heart
or mind.
* There are
three types of
nafs’

that are mentioned in the
Qur’an,
Nafs al-Ammara

Bissu

(the commanding soul) (Ch. 12:53),

Nafs al-Lawwama
(the Soul that Blames) (Ch. 75:2)
     and the
Nafs al-Mutma`inna
(the Soul at Peace) (Ch. 89:27)
What is this Nafs al-ammara bissu?
 This
nafs
intrinsically directs its owner towards the fulfilment of lust
and carnal desires.  It acts in a highly selfish manner.
Satan is
considered the ally of this soul.

Please go through pages 233 and 234
1.
What do you mean by ‘Jihad’?
2.
How can Jihad be connected to moral life?
3.
What is
‘Nafs’ and what are the 3 types of
Nafs?

2 A. Jihad against Shaytaan and his
temptations!

1)
Shaytaan challenged Allah that he will come to man from all
directions – the only purpose will be to take him away from Right
Path.
2)
Allah granted Shaytaan the power to misguide man.
3)
However, Allah said that he will not able to misguide His righteous
servants.
4)
The Righteous Servants know how to protect themselves from the
temptations of Shaytaan - through struggle against Shaytaan.
(Jihad)
2 B.
The Devil’s snares
HOW SHAYTAAN MISGUIDES & TRAPS US!

1)
Whispering evil (Refer ayah on Page 235)
2)
Spreading enmity and hatred (Refer ayah on page 236)
3)
Hindering people from embracing Islam and being righteous (ayah
on 236)
4)
Self-destruction (Suicide, Infanticide, Genocide, Homicide)
5)
Spreading immorality and stopping people from being modest
(237)
2 C. HOW TO DO JIHAD AGAINST THE
SOUL AND THE DEVIL?

1. Turning to Allah
Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book
and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and
wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah
knows that which you do. (Surah al Ankaboot)
2. Seeking Refuge in Allah
3. Patience and Supplication (Du’aa)
3. Jihad against hypocrites and infidels

1.
Struggling against the Munafiqoon, the hypocrites.
By striving against them with utmost effort, to make them understand Islam and
the way shown by Prophet Muhammad (sal…)
2. Striving against the infidels.
By civilized talk, dignified invitation, avoiding force (Laa ikraaha fid-deen) and
fanaticism or extremism.
Prophet’s Ibrahim’s father
Prophet’s Loot’s wife
Prophet’s Nooh’s son
Aa’siyah’s husband

عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ ۖ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ ﴿١٢٥﴾
