TheNACSApproach Integrates nutrition into policies, programs, and the health service delivery system Grew out of the Food by Prescription model Has evolved in some countries into an approach for all health facility clients Integrating Nutrition Assessment, Counselling, and Support into Health Service Delivery 3

NACS Primary Target Groups in Uganda Children under 2 and pregnant/lactating mothers (covering the 1,000 Days ) Children > 2 years with evidence of growth faltering Adolescents and adults in care and treatment programs Integrating Nutrition Assessment, Counselling, and Support into Health Service Delivery 4

NACS Components: Assessment Nutrition assessment can be used to: Identify medical complications that affect nutritional status Track growth and weight trends Detect diet habits that make it difficult to improve health or that increase the risk of disease Inform nutrition counselling Integrating Nutrition Assessment, Counselling, and Support into Health Service Delivery 5

  6. NACS Components: Counselling Nutrition counselling is an interactive dialogue between an individual client and a trained counsellor to decide what can be done to improve nutritional status. The client and counsellor: Examine challenges to healthy dietary and IYCF practices Identify barriers to changing behaviours Develop ways to overcome those barriers Plan actions to support healthy practices Integrating Nutrition Assessment, Counselling, and Support into Health Service Delivery 6

NACS Components: Support Nutrition support includes: Therapeutic and supplementary foods to treat clinical malnutrition Complementary food supplements for children 6 23 months to prevent malnutrition Micronutrient supplements to prevent vitamin and mineral deficiencies Point-of-use water purification products to prevent water- borne disease Referral to household food support, home-based care, and economic strengthening and livelihood support Integrating Nutrition Assessment, Counselling, and Support into Health Service Delivery 7
