Teachers, this summer, engage your students in writing projects that spark their imagination and provide opportunities for Teachers, this summer, engage your students in writing projects that spark their imagination and provide opportunities for practicing the skills they ve learned over the course of the year. How-To books - use the templates provided to write a How-To book on a topic of your choice. Literary Analysis - read a book and answer the literary analysis questions. Write a paragraph using text evidence. Comic Book or Graphic novel - Draw, sketch and write an original story using pictures and word bubbles. Use the templates provided and be creative. Microblogging Journal - Create a journal of your summer experiences, report on current news, post an announcement, share a funny story, or write your opinion about something important to you by using only 5-6 sentences. Nature Study - head outside and choose one detail to study - plant, insect, tree, bird or other natural element. Use your powers of observation and record specific details. Then, write a short descriptive paragraph and draw a picture or snap a photo to go along with the writing. Interview a Special Person - Use the interview questions to get to know this person and then write a short paragraph introducing them to someone who doesn t know them. You might learn a thing or two about them along the way.
How-To Books Skill: Plan and Write an Informational Essay To book that teaches someone how to do something step by step. Directions for Students: Directions for Students: Choose a topic for the How-To project such as: How-to take care of ___ (each student chooses a pet - supplies, care/feeding, activities) How-to make ___(each student chooses a type of food item/recipe - supplies, procedure, serving suggestions) How-to build ____(a lego project, sandcastle, tree fort, etc. -supplies, procedure, finishing touches) How-to play ___(a sport, board game, or other activity - supplies/equipment, rules, fun facts) How-to _____ (student choice) Create a summarizing framework for the chosen topic. Ex: Topic: How to build a sandcastle Main Idea#1: supplies Main Idea #2: procedure Main Idea #3: finishing touches On each page of the template, draw or add a photo in the box. Then, write your paragraph to teach about that section of your topic. Be sure to use some of the sentence starters for variety and interesting word choice.

Instead of writing the story in words, use pictures and thought or dialogue bubbles to tell the story. Use the template provided to complete the assignment. EXAMPLE Summarizing Framework: This story is about Mac, a fire breathing dragon. The problem was he was trying to make friends but they were afraid of his fire breath . The problem was solved when the other animals used his fire breath to roast marshmallows for s mores. NOTE to STUDENTS: This project follows the same shape as a story told in words using the Narrative Diamond. It will need an entertaining beginning, elaborative detail, suspense, main event and extended ending.

NOTE: NOTE: If you have the use of a video camera, consider videotaping the interview so you have all of the information handy before writing your paragraph.
