Hiring Side What are they looking for? Someone who will: Publish well, be respected Get Tenure Be a Good Colleague / Collaborator They re looking for: What skills you bring Evidence you can navigate research process Signs of what the next 5 years will look like
And You? Lots of pressure to place well But fit matters more Need colleagues who appreciate and can support your research Have a clear idea of who you want to be Communicate that to the market Look for a place that is excited about you and your research
Your Story Everyone is going to get summarized into one or two bullet points What do you want your bullet points to be? Just the nice one from Michigan ? How does your research tie together Topics Methodology A mix of breadth and focus can be good Behavioral and what?
Your Packet C.V. Everything, in brief. Econ: fields Cover letter Story start. Any special draw. Research Statement Where your story really gets delivered. What questions do you study, and why? What skills and methods? Teaching Statement Experience, interests. Papers JMP, publications, anything polished Recommendation letters (3-4) People who can speak to your strengths, say why your papers are important Website Have one! With papers! Transcripts
Interviews Usually about 30 minutes Every one will go different Needs to be a conversation, not a script Go where their interest is Have a plan what do you need to get across? Big picture, not just your papers Be ready to talk about your projects in varying amounts of depth 1 min, 5 min, 20 minute version Have questions for them
Flyouts Job Talk (1 or 1.5 hours) One-on-One meetings (30-45 mins) Two-way conversation: Your research, their research, potential points of connection Would you like them as a colleague? Dinner Tour of campus and/or city Mix of you selling yourself to them, they selling university to you
Offers Hooray! Usually have a few weeks to decide I had only 1 week Sometimes can get extension (don t overdo it) Keep in communication with chair Be honest, professional, don t burn bridges Terms: salary, research budget, teaching load May be negotiable Talk it through with your advisers and partner It is your job, not theirs
