Justice in Our Lives: Inside-Out Prison Exchange Carolyn Schrock-Shenk Marita Beachy Martin Hofkamp
Overview of Inside-Out Founded in 1997 Temple University, Graterford Prison Lori Pompa and Paul From 1 class of 30 students to 300+ classes and over 10,000 students have participated so far
What is this class? -It's an opportunity for college/university students to have class with incarcerated men or women -Levels the playing field and produces a healthy class environment where students can learn and interact with one another and break down the boundaries that define the 'us' vs. 'them' mentality
Objective of these classes "To create a dynamic partnership between institutions of higher learning and correctional systems in order to deepen the conversation about and transform our approaches to issues of crime and justice."
Typical Structure of Class -Once a week -2.5 hrs -Discussion-based -Facilitation -Icebreakers -Activities -Sensitivities -Weekly readings -Weekly writing assignments -Final group project
Our Summer Goal Bring the Inside-Out program to Goshen and implement a Restorative Justice course at Elkhart County Correctional Facility. Elkhart County Correctional: County Jail between Goshen and Elkhart 6 years old Holds an average of 500-700 people Minimum, Medium, and Maximum Security
Challenges: -Timing and the transitory nature of the Jail Responses: -Restructured it into a May Term course -4 days a week for 3 1/2 weeks -Continued meetings
Course Objectives: How do we understand and achieve right relationships in our personal lives and communities as well as understand and overcome obstacles to those relationships? Lesson Objectives: What are right relationships? What is the function of the criminal justice system? Why do people commit crime? What are the roles and needs of victims and communities in Restorative Justice?

Session 7 What are prisons for?
Discussion What is the appropriate role for prisons in society? Is this the role prisons actually play? Why or why not? An effective criminal justice system holds individuals accountable for criminal behavior. To what extent does our system do this? How could we more effectively hold individuals accountable?
