Initiatives Towards Sustainable Tuna Fishing and Food Security in the Pacific Region
Various initiatives and efforts are being undertaken in the Pacific region to promote sustainable tuna fishing and enhance food security. Activities include workshops to improve tuna stock assessments, modelling the effects of climate change on tuna populations, and efforts to increase value and create more employment in countries like Vanuatu. Funding support from organizations like GEF and the World Bank is aiding these sustainability projects. Lessons from countries like Iceland are also being considered to enhance practices in the region.

SUSTAINABILITY SPC workshop to identify tuna stock structure Expected to improve: ? ? Stock assessments Management arrangements ? Climate modelling ? Funding provided by GEF via World Bank Ocean Partnerships for Sustainable Fisheries and Biodiversity conservation ?
SUSTAINABILITY Modelling the effects of climate change Skipjack tuna Combined biomass of all tuna caught by purse-seine is likely to move progressively eastwards towards high seas areas Licence revenue for PICTs from purse-seine fishing is likely to decrease by 15% by 2050 Combined Funding provided by GEF via World Bank Ocean Partnerships for Sustainable Fisheries and Biodiversity Source: Senina et al.
