TOLL OF TOBACCO ON MICHIGAN Tobacco use remains the leading cause of death in Michigan with 16,200 adults dying each year from smoking. We most often think of smoking and the lungs, but smoking harms nearly every organ in the body. 213,000 Michigan kids under 18 will ultimately die prematurely from smoking.
TOLL OF TOBACCO ON MICHIGAN Tobacco use kills nearly twice as many people in Michigan than drug overdose, alcohol, auto accidents, murders, suicides, and AIDS combined.

TOBACCO PREVENTION SAVES MONEY For every $1 spent on tobacco prevention, Michigan will reduce tobacco-related health care spending and hospitalizations by up to $55. Reducing tobacco use saves money for Michigan businesses by reducing absenteeism and unsanctioned breaks.
STATE TOBACCO PREVENTION FUNDING SUPPORTS COMPREHENSIVE TOBACCO CONTROL PROGRAMS A comprehensive state tobacco control program is a coordinated effort to: Prevent initiation of commercial tobacco use among youth and young adults. Promote quitting among adults and youth. Eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke. Identify and eliminate tobacco-related disparities among population groups.

MASTER SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT In 1998, 46 states, five U.S. territories, the District of Columbia, and the five largest U.S. tobacco companies reached an agreement (the Master Settlement Agreement or MSA) about the advertising, marketing, and promotion of tobacco products. The MSA requires the tobacco industry to pay states $10 billion annually for the indefinite future. MSA payments were expected and intended to be spent on preventing and reducing tobacco use, but this is not how many states spend them.
