Human Bones: An Introduction to the Skeletal System

Science in the
Environment

Unit 1 – Living Things
Outcome 2.1 – Identifying Body Parts - Bones

Learning Intentions /
Success Criteria

LI – Today I will learn the names of some important bones in the
human body

SC – I will be able to name 8/10 bones correctly

The Human Skeleton

The
skeleton
 is the name
given to the full set of bones
in a human body
There are 270 bones in total
in an adult’s skeleton.

The Skull

The
skull
is the main bone in the head. It acts
as a helmet, protecting the brain.
The other important bone in the head is the
jaw
. Humans use this to open and close their
mouth (i.e. to eat, talk etc.)
The Torso

Your
shoulderblade
 is at the top of
your back. It helps you move your
arms and shoulder.

Your
collarbone
 runs across your
chest from the top of your arm,
connecting your shoulders to your
ribcage and supporting your arms.

The
ribcage
 protects your heart and
lungs. It is made up of 24 ribs and the
breastbone
 which runs up and down
the middle.

The
hip bone
is part of the pelvis,
which protects the organs in the
lower body.

The Backbone

The
backbone
(or spine) is one of
the most important bones in the
human body.
It runs from the skull down to the
bottom of your back.
There are a lot of nerves around
your spine which carry information
and instructions from your body to
your brain and back again.
If you damage your spine you can
be paralysed and left unable to walk
or even killed.
The Arms

The big bone that runs from your shoulder
to your elbow is called the
humerus
.

The bones between your elbow and your
hand are called the
radius
 and the
ulna

There are 27 little bones in your hands.
The Legs

The
thighbone
 (or femur) is the
largest and strongest bone in the
human body.

The
kneecap
 (or patella) helps the
leg bend and connects the thigh to
the shin.

Another important bone in the leg is
the
shin
(or tibia). It is the thick bone
between the knee and the foot.
Draw a line between the name of the
bone in the box on the right and the area
of the body in the box on the left where it
is found.
