Guildford and Waverley CEPN Dr Fiona Groom, Dr Leslie Campbell
Formation of group Formed November 2014 after first CEPN Conference Comprises: Dr Hamish Whitaker, GP Tutor Sarah Avenall, PCWT, Guildford and Waverley CCG Dr Fiona Groom, TPD Dr Leslie Campbell, TPD
Guildford and Waverley Situation at formation of CEPN: Majority of practices training practices- multiple GPs and trainers nearing retirement Large number of Practice Nurses nearing retirement Recruitment currently not too problematic but recognised future difficulties Newly formed Federation with no active contracts Referral management service (RSS) run by CCG but not collecting any useful data for educational input
Educational situation Regular Educational Half Days arranged by GP tutor Well attended by local GPs but not by Practice Nurses Practices reluctant to release Practice Nurses to attend training events Near full training capacity, but multiple trainees taking maternity leave in ST3 Difficulty in placing F2 trainees New PCWT in post and finding it difficult to access practices New student nurse training course set up at Surrey Uni but difficulty in getting GP placements for trainee
Priorities To decide on format of CEPN and arrange regular meetings To support PCWT in accessing practices To encourage practices to become involved in Practice Nurse training To encourage practices to release PNs for Educational Half Days To extract more meaningful data from RSS to identify learning needs for GPs To encourage practices to take more Foundation trainees To encourage more Foundation trainers to become GPST trainers To increase awareness of mutiprofessional working and encourage placements
To decide on format of CEPN and arrange regular meetings Decided to remain as a small group initially and not form a limited company To make links with recently formed Federation rather than duplicating efforts To meet monthly on a Thursday lunchtime after VTS sessions To invite other professionals eg student nurse, PCWT from other areas to help generate new ideas
To support PCWT in accessing practices Invited PCWT to Trainers meeting and introduced her to trainers Gave a presentation at Trainers Half Day to raise profile of CEPN and workforce crisis Encouraged trainers to invite PCWT to their practices to discuss PN mentorship Discussed pros and cons of PN mentorship and long term risks of not becoming involved in PN training Tried to use pull rather then push to influence trainers
To encourage practices to become involved in Practice Nurse training Gave PCWT opportunity to discuss PN training and mentorship at Trainers Meetings and Educational Half days Continued to discuss and try to persuade trainers to encourage their practices to become involved in PN training Led by example- started PN training in our own practices and shared our experiences Discussed asking Student Nurse to share her experiences at Educational Half day and possibly encouraging Student Nurses to learn alongside PNs at Educational Sessions
To encourage practices to release PNs For Educational Half Days Gave presentation and led discussion on Multiprofessional learning at Trainers Group Used informal discussions at Cumberland Lodge to try to influence trainers to allow PNs to attend GP Tutor spoke about benefits of PN attendance at Educational Half Days during these sessions GP Tutor and PCWT ran sessions suitable for both GPs and PNs at Educational Half Days- some joint for GPs and PNs, some parallel sessions and more focussed on each individual role
To extract more meaningful data from RSS to identify learning needs for GPs GP Tutor influenced CCG to give Referral Service contract to Federation Local GP ( previous PD) appointed as leader of RSS with aim of both improving appropriateness of referrals but also to collect data to make educational sessions more targeted to learning needs Initial IT problems, but now collecting data to inform choice of educational topics GP Tutor arranged pilot of Map of Medicine IT software to improve knowledge of guidelines and local services
To encourage practices to take more Foundation trainees Asked Foundation Trainer to lead session at Cumberland Lodge regarding F2 training Used this and informal discussions at Cumberland Lodge to encourage existing trainers to take F2 trainees to fill any gaps in their training schedule eg through maternity leave Informal discussions at Educational Half Days and Federation meetings used to encourage non training practices to become involved in Foundation Training
To encourage more Foundation trainers to become GPST trainers Invited Foundation Trainers to attend all Trainers meetings Invited Foundation Trainers to Cumberland Lodge for educational sessions and fellowship alongside ST trainers Experienced trainers carried out Foundation Trainers appraisals to help develop mentorship and progress along educators pathway
To increase awareness of mutiprofessional working and encourage placements PDs ran training session on multiprofessional working for GP trainers and GP trainees Regular discussions on skill-mix in GP and benefits of working alongside other professionals Sharing of experiences from Trainers who have trained Paramedics to influence others to become involved Discussions led by GP tutor at trainers meetings regarding role of Community Pharmacists, Physicians Assistants
