Approximately how many spots are available through the Magnet Lottery each year?
-Kinder: 88 Regular Magnet + 22 Bilingual Magnet spots for a total of 110 students

 approximately 15 to 20 open spots for a total of 130 (due to increase of student to teacher ratio)

 approximately 35 to 45 open spots  for a total of 165 (due to increase of student to teacher ratio and homerooms)

 approximately 10 to 15 open spots for a total of 165 (dependent upon student withdrawals/non-renewals)
 
Approximately how many applications are received during Magnet Lottery each year?
On average, about 250 to 300 applications are received for Kinder  & 6
th
 grade; about 150 are received for other grade levels.
 
Are students required to be GT/Vanguard identified to apply?
No, GT/Vanguard designation is not required to apply. Non-identified students are invited to apply for GT once annually
 
Is transportation provided to magnet students?
Yes, any student who does not live within a 2.0 mile radius of The Rice school is offered transportation
 
Do we offer any dual language courses?
No, The Rice school is no longer magnet for Spanish and does not offer any other language courses
 
Do we offer before and after school care?
Yes, our ASP program offers Early-Risers before and Extended Day after school care for a fee, dependent upon hours of care
 
GT/Vanguard
 
GT Identified
Our GT/Vanguard identified students are serviced in the general education classroom by  GT certified teachers.
 
In Kinder – 5
th  
grade,
 
students are grouped heterogeneously in homeroom classes with 4 or more GT students.
 
In middle school, students are grouped in GT cohorts that are assigned to the same class schedule throughout the school day.
 
Non-GT Identified
 
Non-GT identified students are placed in regular magnet classes.
Non-GT identified students in Kinder and 5
th
 are automatically tested universally. No application is needed.
Non-GT identified students in 1
st
 -12
th
 can apply to test for GT identification once annually. The student may be recommended
     by a teacher, self-nominated, or submitted by parent application for testing.
Students are notified of their GT status in February via a parent letter sent home. Any student who qualifies for GT will be
     serviced as a GT student the following school year.
