Why numbers matter Funding for dual credits is tied to Actual students vs projections Retention rate Success rate Percentage of students who meet the primary target audience
Results 18-19 Central Lakes Regional Planning Team Actuals: 97% Retention: 91% Success: 95% Students from the primary target audience at risk, underachieving, but college capable : 84%
Primary Target Audience Disengaged and underachieving students who have the potential to succeed but are at risk of not graduating, and students who left school before graduating The student: has had numerous absences; has previously dropped out or is at risk of dropping out; is out of school but is reluctant to return to secondary school for non-academic reasons; displays a lack of involvement or engagement in school or community activities; sees little connection between secondary school and his or her preferred future; lacks confidence in his or her ability to succeed; is unsure of his or her pathway beyond secondary school; is in need of career clarification
Primary Target Audience continued The student: has fewer credits than average for his or her grade and is therefore not on track to graduate on time is older than other students in his or her grade was making progress earlier, but progress has slowed is demonstrating a decline in achievement or marks over time
Program Fidelity The goal is program fidelity making sure dual credit programming conforms to its two goals: Assisting secondary students in completing their OSSD Helping secondary students successfully transition to college or apprenticeship Our funder, the School College Work Initiative (SCWI), reviews ONSis data to be sure dual credit students are from the primary target audience SCWI has said that dual credits are not the solution for all student issues.
SCWI suggests Dual credit candidates should: Be in their fourth or fifth year of secondary school Be close to graduation, ideally graduating the year they take a dual credit Have 22 or more credits ideally Be taking college level courses providing the skills to succeed in college Not be taking workplace level courses Not be under the age of 16, and ideally 17 or older (age as of December 31, 2019) Not be years away from graduation Note: We do not exclude Grade 11 students from dual credit enrolment. However they should be in the minority and should be included only when the Grade 12 student pool is exhausted.
Two other target audiences OYAP Level 1 Dual Credits: Students must be enrolled in OYAP with a signed Registered Training Agreement Students must also be close to graduation SHSM Focused Dual Credits: Students must be close to graduation Students must be enrolled in their school s SHSM which includes the dual credit as a major credit Not all dual credit programs have an SHSM focus. Check with your board lead
Dual Credit Recruitment & Retention Strategies Dana Ramsay, SCDSB SCWI Coordinator Krista Barban, SMCDSB Student Success Consultant

Ideas Shared in Previous Years: Weekly SST meetings Announcements Please share your strategies for recruitment Grade 11 interviews Grade 12 assemblies PowerSchool grad tracker Midterm check on who might not get a needed credit
Retention: keeping students in dual credit Each dual credit has a dual credit support teacher (DCT) attached Most DCTs have a master Google doc with notes on attendance and/or progress of each dc student Please share your strategies for retention Dual credit students can access services at the college to help them be successful
Ideas for the future: request for proposal (RFP) process Each winter (usually early December), the regional planning team submits a request for dual credits, SWAC, and activity funding for the next school year Please share any future ideas for As a team we do a thorough job of assessing the actuals, retention and success of all of our programming using data dual credit programming From there decisions are made about what to include in the RFP We value your ideas for future courses and/or feedback on current courses
