  1. Fun With Numbers

  2. What day were you born? On a piece of paper, write the number of the day you were born. For example: if you were born on August 32nd, you would write 32. Now set up a graphic organizer like this one:

  3. Fill in the boxes with at least one fact each. After you get one fact each, try for more! An equation (has an equal sign) An equation that uses at least one negative number 32 Write the opposite Interesting fact(s) HINT: google your number!

  4. Here are some ideas! Some equations: one for each operation (+, -, x, /) Use at least one negative number (-16) x (-2) -32 -1 + 33 = 32 8 x 4 = 32 20 + 12 = 32 83 51 = 32 64/2 = 32 32 Write the opposite Interesting facts Fahrenheit freezing temperature The number of teeth in an adult The number of teams in the NFL Mrs. Everman has taught 32 years! -32

  5. Now pick one fact you will share with the class. Put your fact in the chat like this: Water freezes at 32oF.

  6. Review of integers: Multiply or Divide When multiplying or dividing two negative integers, the answer will always be positive. Examples (-5) (-6) = 30 (-24) (-2) = 12 (-7) (-4) = 32 (-27) (-9) = 3 (-24) (-2) = 48 (-60) (-10) = 6 This is NOT the case with adding and subtracting, but more on that later!

  7. When you multiply or divide a negative and a positive, the result is also negative. Examples (-5) (6) = -30 (24)/(-2) = -12 (7) (-4) = -28 (-27)/(9) = -3 (-24) (2) = -48 (60)/(-10) = -6

  8. Now lets try some! Here are some practice problems. Just write the five answers on your paper. Please DO NOT use a calculator!

  9. Check your answers! How many did you get? Put the number you got right in the chat.

  10. Remember, division works the same way. Please DO NOT use a calculator. Write each problem and its answer.

  11. How did you do? Put the number you got right in the chat.

  12. Get ready to answer in chat! I will read these problems one by one. You are going to tell me whether the answer is positive or negative. You don t have to tell me what the number answer is just write positive(+) or negative (-). Please do not use a calculator. READY? Here we go!

  13. a. (-40)/10 b. (-60)/-6 c. (-25) (-4) d. (-7) (2) e. (700)/(-100) f. (3)/(-20)

  14. a. (-40)/10 -4 10 b. (-60)/-6 c. (-25) (-4) 100 d. (-7) (2) -14 e. (700)/(-100) -70 -60 f. (3)/(-20)

  15. Review Absolute Value

  16. Examples Write the absolute value for each on your paper.

  17. Check your work!

  18. Add and Subtract Integers Think about money!

  19. If you spend $9 of $25 you earned, how much do you have left?

  20. If you spend $9 of $25 you earned, how much do you have left? Now that you have figured out the answer, can you write an equation about this problem?

  21. If you spend $9 of $25 you earned, how much do you have left? Now that you have figured out the answer, can you write an equation about this problem? -9 + 25 = 16

  22. If you spend $9 of $25 you earned, how much do you have left? Now that you have figured out the answer, can you write an equation about this problem? -9 + 25 = 16 Notice how the answer is positive. The number with the larger absolute value is also positive.

  23. You earn 20 points in a card game, but then you lose 35. How many points do you have?

  24. You earn 20 points in a card game, but then you lose 35. How many points do you have? Now that you have figured out the answer, can you write an equation for my problem?

  25. You earn 20 points in a card game, but then you lose 35. How many points do you have? Now that you have figured out the answer, can you write an equation for my problem? 20 + (-35) = -15

  26. You earn 20 points in a card game, but then you lose 35. How many points do you have? Now that you have figured out the answer, can you write an equation for my problem? 20 + (-35) = -15 Notice how the answer is negative. The number with the larger absolute value is also negative.

  27. Get ready to answer in chat! You are going to tell me whether the answer is positive or negative. You don t have to tell me what the number answer is just write positive(+) or negative (-). Please do not use a calculator. READY? Here we go!

  28. a. (-40) + 3 b. 25 + (-5) c. (-100) + 150 d. (-10) + 10 e. 17 + (-37) f. (-6) + (-4)

  29. a. (-40) + 3 -37 20 b. 25 + (-5) c. (-100) + 150 50 d. (-10) + 10 0 e. 17 + (-37) -27 -10 (WHY?) f. (-6) + (-4)

  30. Remember when multiplying or dividing, a double negative makes a positive. BUT: when you add two negative numbers, the result is negative. Because: if you spend $40, then you spend $10 more, you have lost $50, not gained $50!

  31. Now write the answers to these problems on your paper. a. (-2) + (-4) = b.1 + (-6) = c. (-6) + (-3) = d.(-4) + 9 = e. (-5) + 5 = f. (-2) + (-1) =

  32. Check your work! Put the number out of 6 you got right in the chat. a. (-2) + (-4) = -6 b.1 + (-6) = -5 c. (-6) + (-3) = -9 d.(-4) + 9 = 5 e. (-5) + 5 = 0 f. (-2) + (-1) = -3

  33. Up for next time: Subtraction of integers More practice with addition, division, and multiplication of integers
