FLESH SPIRIT The Flesh and The Spirit Which shall we serve?
Introduction Christians enjoy freedom in Christ Freedom from sin - John 8:31-34 Freedom the Law of Moses - Romans 7:4-6 Freedom from men s traditions - Galatians 4:9 It is Christ s desire that we be free - Galatians 5:1 This freedom is not a license to sin - Romans 6:1-2 We must use care to avoid the desires of the flesh Galatians 5:13-15 2
Introduction To avoid the fleshly desires, Paul commands us to walk in the Spirit - Galatians 5:16 If we do this, we will not succumb to fleshly desires Dangers of the flesh will be diminished if we so walk The goal of this study is to consider several reasons given by the apostle Paul on WHY we should walk in the Spirit Galatians 5:16-26 3
Galatians 5:16-19, NKJV 16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 4
Galatians 5:20-23, NKJV 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 5
THE SPIRIT & THE FLESH ARE CONTRARY TO ONE ANOTHER- Galatians 5:17 They are like two opponents fighting for your mind and soul They are in opposition to each other - Galatians 5:17a The Spirit refers to the Holy Spirit not the human spirit This conclusion follows the context of this epistle We eagerly await the hope of righteousness through the Spirit - Galatians 5:5 Paul s argument in Galatians 5:25 would not make any sense if the human spirit is meant If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit 6
THE SPIRIT & THE FLESH ARE CONTRARY TO ONE ANOTHER- Galatians 5:17 We will serve one or the other If we follow the flesh, you cannot do the will of the Spirit - Galatians 5:17b Like the dilemma described in Romans 7:14-23, following the flesh will enslave By following the help of the Spirit, the flesh can be overcome - Romans 8:12-14 We must choose who we will serve The lusts of the flesh Or the Spirit of God We cannot serve both! 7
IF YOU ARE LED BY THE SPIRIT, YOU ARE NOT UNDER THE LAW - Galatians 5:18 Contextually, the law has reference primarily to the Law of Moses The purpose of the law was two-fold To reveal sin - Galatians 3:19a; Romans 3:20 To condemn the sinner as guilty - Romans 3:19 To be under the law was to be under a state of condemnation The law does not provide forgiveness of sin It only brings condemnation 8
IF YOU ARE LED BY THE SPIRIT, YOU ARE NOT UNDER THE LAW - Galatians 5:18 Those walking in the Spirit are not under the condemnation of the law Because obedience to the gospel of Christ revealed by the Spirit results in freedom Freedom from condemnation - Romans 8:1 Freedom from the law of sin and death Romans 8:2; 6:17-18 This freedom was made possible through the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross - Romans 8:3-4 Because those walking according to the Spirit do things of which there is no law of condemnation Cf. Romans 8:4; Galatians 5:22-23 9
FULLFILL THE LUSTS OF THE FLESH AND YOU WILL NOT INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD - Galatians 5:19-21 This refers to the Heavenly Kingdom Spoken of by Jesus - Matthew 25:34 The one Paul looked forward to - 2 Timothy 4:18 Referred to by Peter - 2 Peter 1:10-22 Paul issues a double warning of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past - Galatians 5:21 He does not want us to miss it! 10
FULLFILL THE LUSTS OF THE FLESH AND YOU WILL NOT INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD - Galatians 5:19-21 The eternal end of those who fulfill the lusts of the flesh These have no inheritance in the Kingdom of God, the Eternal Kingdom (Heaven) Rather, the wrath of God is what they will receive - Ephesians 5:6-7 Which will it be? Walk in the Spirit, or fulfill the lusts of the flesh? The right choice should be a clear one! 11
THOSE WHO ARE CHRISTS HAVE CRUCIFIED THE FLESH - Galatians 5:24 In baptism, we died to sin, having been crucified with Christ Our old man was crucified with Him, that we might no longer be slaves of sin - Romans 6:1-6 We died with Christ in baptism that we might be free from sin and live a new life with Him - Rom. 6:7-10 As Christians, we are to continue to crucify self We continue to put to death the members which are on earth - Colossians 3:5-7 We must keep the old man off - Colossians 3:8-11 There is no hope if we do not do this - Romans 8:13 12
IF WE LIVE IN THE SPIRIT, LET US ALSO WALK IN THE SPIRIT - Galatians 5:25 We owe our spiritual lives to the work of the Holy Spirit It was the Holy Spirit who made it possible that the gospel was revealed as Jesus said it would be John 16:7-13 The apostles credited the gospel message to the Holy Spirit - 1 Corinthians 2:9-13 When on obeys the gospel of God s grace, they are renewed by the Holy Spirit - Titus 3:5 It is the Spirit in us who gives us new life Romans 8:11-13 13
IF WE LIVE IN THE SPIRIT, LET US ALSO WALK IN THE SPIRIT - Galatians 5:25 Since we live in the Spirit, shall we not walk in the Spirit? It is by the Holy Spirit that God has made our NEW life possible It is only proper then that we live our lives Being led by the Spirit - Galatians 5:18; Romans 8:14 Walking in the Spirit - Galatians 5:25; Romans 8:1-2 14
Conclusion We have discussed five reasons we should walk in the Spirit and not fulfill the lusts of the flesh 1. The Spirit and the flesh are contrary to one another 2. If you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law 3. Fulfill the lusts of the flesh, and you will not inherit the kingdom of God 4.Those who are Christ s have crucified the flesh 5. Since we live in the Spirit, we should also walk in the Spirit 15
Conclusion If you are not convinced that you should walk according to the Spirit, please consider what Paul told the Galatians 16
Galatians 6:7-8 7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. 8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting The Flesh or the Spirit Which shall we serve? 17
