Psalm 103

Praise the
Lord
, my soul;
all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
Praise the
Lord
, my soul,
and forget not all his benefits—
who forgives all your sins
    and heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
The
Lord
 works righteousness
and justice for all the oppressed.

Psalm 103

He made known his ways to Moses,
his deeds to the people of Israel:
The
Lord
 is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love.
He will not always accuse,
    nor will he harbor his anger forever;
10
he does not treat us as our sins deserve
or repay us according to our iniquities.
11
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
    so great is his love for those who fear him;
12
as far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

Psalm 103

13
As a father has compassion on his children,
    so the
Lord
 has compassion on those who fear him;
14
for he knows how we are formed,
he remembers that we are dust.
15
The life of mortals is like grass,
    they flourish like a flower of the field;
16
the wind blows over it and it is gone,
and its place remembers it no more.
17
But from everlasting to everlasting
    the
Lord
’s love is with those who fear him,
and his righteousness with their children’s children—
18
with those who keep his covenant
and remember to obey his precepts.

Psalm 103

19
The
Lord
has established his throne in heaven,
and his kingdom rules over all.
20
Praise the
Lord
, you his angels,
you mighty ones who do his bidding,
    who obey his word.
21
Praise the
Lord
, all his heavenly hosts,
you his servants who do his will.
22
Praise the
Lord
, all his works
    everywhere in his dominion.
Praise the
Lord
, my soul.

The apostles gathered around Jesus and
reported to him all they had done and taught.
31
Then, because so many people were coming
and going that they did not even have a chance
to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by
yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
32
So they went away by themselves in a boat to
a solitary place.
33
But many who saw them
leaving recognized them and ran on foot from
all the towns and got there ahead of them.
34
When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd,
he had compassion on them, because they
were like sheep without a shepherd.
So he began teaching them many things.

35
By this time it was late in the day, so his
disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,”
they said, “and it’s already very late.
36
Send the
people away so that they can go to the
surrounding countryside and villages and buy
themselves something to eat.”
37
But he answered, “You give them something
to eat.”
They said to him, “That would take more than
half a year’s wages! Are we to go and spend
that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”
38
“How many loaves do you have?” he
asked. “Go and see.” When they found out,
they said, “Five—and two fish.”

God chose the weak things of the world to
shame the strong…Therefore, as it is written:

Then Jesus directed them to have all the
people sit down in groups on the green grass.
40
So they sat down in groups of hundreds and
fifties.
41
Taking the five loaves and the two fish and
looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and
broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his
disciples to distribute to the people. He also
divided the two fish among them all.
42
They all ate and were satisfied,
43
and the
disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken
pieces of bread and fish.
44
The number of the
men who had eaten was five thousand.

Jesus showed compassion for His
disciples by leading them to rest.
Is there a time and place where you
can retreat to pray and connect with
God?
Jesus calls us to have compassion on
others, and can use us as we are.
Can you think of a present need that
you are able to meet for others?
