  1. Making Peace Connor Allen

  2. Introductory video https://youtu.be/11t0sec42XU

  3. Lesson objectives To investigate peace and why it is important To empower you to become changemakers To analyse poetry about peace To write your own poem about peace

  4. Activity 1: The world I live in (Part 1) As a young person in 2023, what do you care about in the world that you live in? Take a selection of post-it notes and write responses to fill a wall or table answering this question. Write the good and the bad, the happy and the sad. Think big, think small, something as close and intimate as family, something as global as racism. Write your thoughts, write your feelings.

  5. Activity 1: The world I live in (Part 2) Once you ve filled an area with thoughts on post-it notes, go around the space to look at what everyone else has written. Does anything surprise you? Does anything resonate with you? Are there thoughts you agree with? Find one post-it note in the sea of responses that you haven t written but you believe is the most important issue for young people today. Take it back to your seat and write a response (in any form you want: a paragraph, a mind-map, a diagram, a table, a doodle, or something else). Why is the one you have chosen so important to you in 2023? Share it with the class.

  6. Activity 2: Agree/Disagree Split the room into two halves (one side Agree and the other Disagree). You will receive a series of statements from your teacher. If you agree with the statement, move to the side of Agree, if you disagree with the statement, then move to the side of Disagree. You will then be asked why you chose to agree or disagree, to create a forum for debate.

  7. Statement 1: iPhone is better than Samsung.

  8. Statement 2: Wales has the best rugby team in the world

  9. Statement 3: War is always wrong.

  10. Statement 4: Bullying is the biggest thing affecting young people right now.

  11. Statement 5: Global peace is achievable.

  12. Activity 3: Peace Tree-ty Discuss the following three prompts in small groups, or as a class. Write notes/examples answering the questions. Prompts: What is peace? Why is peace important? Consider whether the following were peacemakers: - Rosa Parks - Malcolm X - Mahatma Gandhi - Winston Churchill - Emmeline Pankhurst peace From the discussion and examples, draw a tree with four branches. Write peace in the trunk of the tree, and pick four words to write in the branches that exemplify what peace means to you. Additional task: After you have picked your four words, expand on the words in new branches - e.g. if you chose the word Equality, add new branches explaining what equality means to you.

  13. Reading and reflecting Read And 2Morrow by Tupac Shakur. Is this poem about peace? If so, why? If not, why not? What imagery, themes and words stand out? Discuss why you believe it is and isn t about peace.

  14. And 2Morrow by Tupac Shakur Tonight I lay my head down but the pressure never stops knawing at my sanity content when I am dropped Today is filled with anger fueled with hidden hate scared of being outcast afraid of common fate But 2morrow I c change a chance 2 build a new Built on spirit intent of Heart and ideals based on truth Today is built on tragedies which no one wants 2 face nightmares 2 humanities and morally disgraced and tomorrow I wake with second wind and strong because of pride 2 know I fought with all my heart 2 keep my dream alive Tonight is filled with rage violence in the air children bred with ruthlessness because no one at home cares

  15. Writing task Write your poem about peace. Referring back to all we ve done throughout the lesson, ask yourself one last question: What does peace mean to me? After having read Tupac's poem, write about what your tomorrow looks like? Is your tomorrow filled with peace? Write your own version of And 2Morrow . You might like to write a response to any one of these questions, none, or one of your own: When I imagine peace, what do I think of? When I look at all you ve explored and analysed in this lesson, what do I now think peace means? How is it or has it been achieved? What can I do to help achieve peace in 2023? What would a peaceful world look like? Remember, this poem is your expression of your beliefs, so don t be afraid to write exactly how you think and feel. You already have the skeleton with the words you ve chosen for your Peace Tree-ty. Your poem can rhyme if you want it to rhyme. Alternatively, it doesn t have to. It s about you and your voice!
