Religion Religion is any specific system of beliefs about a deity, often involving rituals, a code of ethics, and a philosophy of life." Religion (to tie back) set of traditional beliefs and practices organized around a supernatural event and/or moral claims. Religious belief often springs from mystical experiences the overwhelming awareness that one has been touched by a reality that far transcends ordinary.
Negatives to Religion Sigmund Freud described religion as a universal obsessional neurosis in that it is a remaking of one s experiences between child and father, a replaying of good or bad happenings in one s life, etc. Karl Marx believed that religion is a tool for oppressing people. Terrifies rather than inspire Oppresses instead of liberate Misguided by charismatic and misguided leaders Psychological havoc by pronouncing judgment Creates barriers of hatred and intolerance
Religion All religions help to uncover meaning in the midst of the mundane. We look to religions for understanding, for answers to our many questions about life. Who are we? Why are we here? What happens after we die? Why is there suffering? Why is there evil? William Turner of Duke University said at the Ellison Convocation Be careful that you don t become a ventriloquist dummy by saying what others say. Know what Jesus has said and is saying.
